Swelling in your gums is a common occurrence, and it can occur for many reasons. Some of these are due to external causes, such as sensitivity to dentures or a toothpaste or mouthwash. But there are also more serious causes, including infection, gingivitis, malnutrition or a reaction to a drug. Several home remedies are able to provide relief while saving you a visit to the dentist, but if your condition worsens or other symptoms are present, you should visit a health-care professional for treatment.
Avoid Agitating Substances
Mouthwash, alcohol and tobacco are all substances that can exacerbate swollen gums and make them more sensitive and painful. If a specific brand of mouthwash or other oral cleaning agent is causing the swelling of your gums, end use of that product. You may consider ending the use of mouthwashes entirely if they are the source of your swollen gums.
Tea Remedies
You can apply wet tea bags to your gums to relief pain and swelling. Additionally, you can drink green tea and swish it in your mouth for a similar effect. This introduces the polyphenols found in teas to your gums. They are high in antioxidants and can help improve the health of your gum cells.
Fruits and Vegetables
Consume fruits and vegetables to infuse the gums with valuable vitamins and minerals. Swollen gums can sometimes result from scurvy, which occurs due to a deficiency of the nutrients found in raw fruits and vegetables.
Examine Toothbrush
If your gums continue to bleed through regular brushing, you could have a toothbrush that's worn out its welcome. As the bristles on your toothbrush age, they harden and become stiffer. This makes them more abrasive on your gums and teeth. A new toothbrush may do the trick, and lightening the strength of your pressure and stroke when brushing can also help.
