Overview
Masturbation can be defined as self-stimulation to cause sexual excitement. The use of the word masturbation suggests that the person is manipulating his or her genitals to the point of intense pleasure or orgasm. An orgasm is a period of intense excitement in which genital muscles enter into a series of highly pleasurable contractions or movements, and is different for males and females. According to a national study, 95 percent of males and 89 percent of females said that they have masturbated at some point in their lives. For teens, 94 percent of males and 70 percent of females admitted to masturbating.

While masturbation can involve another person, it is often a private act. According to the Alice! Health Promotion Program, masturbation is a healthy way to express and explore your sexuality and release sexual tension. Other health professionals generally agree that private touching is a natural, normal mode of self-exploration and sexual expression.

Before You Masturbate
There are no harmful side effects to masturbation. In fact, there is no chance of pregnancy or STDs as is the case with intercourse. However, frequent masturbation can cause irritation, so consider a water-soluble lubricant.

Ask Your Physician
There is such a thing as chronic or compulsive masturbation. If masturbating is interfering with school, work or other aspects of your life, you may want to consider talking to someone about why you are doing it so often.

More information for females is available in our article on how to masturbate.

Sometimes when a man isn't sexually active and doesn't even masturbate, ejaculation will be triggered by other things. Usually all that happens is some wet dreams.

It's possible, however, for the passage of feces (poop) through the rectum (inside of the butt) to put pressure on the prostate gland. Urination can put pressure on the prostate from the inside, because urine (pee) passes through the prostate gland. You can read more about the prostate gland at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Prostate or any of a number of other internet sites. Direct prostate stimulation can cause spontaneous ejaculation (that is, without the man being stimulated or aroused beforehand) in many males. This is probably what is happening to you.

If you are still concerned, or if you find excreting semen while urinating (peeing) or defecating (pooping) problematic, and especially if this is happening despite your also experiencing orgasm through masturbation and/or sex with a partner at least once a week, you should see a physician or urologist. It is possible for some conditions to make this effect more likely, and some but not all of those conditions can require treatment.

I have found masturbation regimens/techniques on a site called http://advancedmasturbation.com - It really helped me realize that there is more to masturbation than I originally thought. I have been doing a lot of research on it recently, and I am glad to see there are sites like this page where people can learn the facts. I also found interesting biographical information on another page at http://forum.advancedmasturbation.com - After reading that page, I realized there is a whole "science" of masturbation.

~Part 1~
Masturbation is not abnormal or unhealthy. Many doctors and other health professionals recommend it!

If you feel you "need" to masturbate so often that it's interfering with your life -- like, if you need to leave class or take breaks at work to go masturbate; if you can't concentrate on work or schoolwork, or if you feel the urge to masturbate so much it becomes painful to do so -- you should probably talk to a counselor, psychologist or psychiatrist. To find one, call your doctor's office or, in the US, use http://211.org/ to find therapy resources in your area. (You won't have to tell anyone except the therapist what you want to talk about.) There are conditions that can cause what's called "compulsive masturbation" (not a medical term) but they can all be successfully treated.

If you just want to masturbate less often, get involved in other activities, especially physical ones: a sport, jogging or even gardening. If you often buy fast or "heat-n-eat" food, try cooking using fresh ingredients, which takes longer but is healthier. Avoid things that provoke the urge to masturbate: looking at pornographic magazines, movies & websites; watching TV or movies (or playing games) with nudity or an emphasis on romantic relationships; and anything else that "triggers" the urge. If playing video games keeps you distracted from masturbation, that's another option, if not as healthy.

You've only been masturbating for five years, so you're probably still a teen. Don't worry too much, unless it's interfering with your life. An average teenage boy masturbates 3-5 times a day; most guys do it less as they age, but it's still normal for a man in his 20s-40s to masturbate between 2-4 times a week & 1-2 times a day. Some do it more, others less, especially if they're sexually active.

~Part 2~
Some people think masturbation is sinful, a belief common among certain types of Christians. Either they believe anything pleasurable is sinful (a weird rule for a loving God); that any sex which can't lead to pregnancy is sinful (so even married couples can't have sex, if an illness like cancer made one of them sterile, or once she's menopausal); or they misunderstand a particular Biblical passage where an old name for masturbation, "onanism," comes from.

Onan was a man in the Jewish Torah (Christians call it the Old Testament). At the time and place when Onan lived, the law required a man to marry his brother's widow if his brother died and, if his brother had no sons, to have sex with his new wife, so his dead brother would "officially" have at least one son to carry on his name, inherit his property, and provide for the widow and any daughters. (Back then men could have more than one wife, so this law didn't mean Onan couldn't have a wife and children of his own.) Onan married his brother's widow as required, but because he didn't want his child raised as his dead brother's, during sex he pulled out and "spilled his seed on the ground." Clearly, the story has nothing to do with masturbation at all! The reason Onan's act was sinful was that it harmed his dead brother, his brother's widow and any daughters they had.

As "stewy2y" found out, wet dreams can be a consequence of not masturbating: a man will ejaculate while asleep (not necessarily from sexual dreams). Never masturbating can also, for men, lead to unexpected ejaculation while urinating (pee) or defecating (poo), which can be confusing or embarrassing.

Whether you try to stop masturbating entirely is a personal choice, but since moderate masturbation is normal and healthy, you should just cut back... if you truly are masturbating "too much."

Dear Sir/Madam,

I am a working professional, and am 30 year old. For last 13-15 years, I am masturbating not regularly but once or twice in a day . some times 10-12 times in a week. Now i am not continuing it and have complete control over the same .But due to the past mistakes my ejaculation time may shortned after my marriage .Still i am unmarried and regularly am doing Exercises to keep myself fit, but............

At present my penis is short ( arround 4-5" during errection) .

Even today some times i am experiencing wet dreams.

Is this affect to my health?
Is this affect on my sexual life.?
Whether i can have baby after marriage or not ?
Whether shall I satisfy my life patner or not ?

Please advise me on the same.

Neither masturbating nor not masturbating will make you less healthy. Side effects of not masturbating (if you're not otherwise sexually active) can include wet dreams and -- much less common, but possible -- ejaculating while you are defecating or urinating. Some studies have also suggested that regular masturbation decreases your chance of developing an enlarged prostate later in life. (Enlarged prostate can lead to cancer.)

If you were in the habit of masturbating so that you ejaculated quickly, you would probably still ejaculate quickly once you married and wanted to have sex with your wife. The solution to this is actually to masturbate some more -- but with a different technique! What you need to do is begin masturbating, using the slowest strokes that still feel good, and when you feel yourself getting close to orgasm, stop. Repeat a few times, until you've been masturbating at least 10-15 minutes without ejaculating, and then continue stroking until you reach orgasm. You need to re-train your body so that it expects sexual stimulation to go on for awhile before it gets to climax -- otherwise your wife is going to be very disappointed when you only last a minute or two, if your penis even makes it inside her before shooting off!

Whether or not you can have children is not affected by whether or not you masturbate or used to masturbate.

For whether you can satisfy your future wife, see my answer to your 2nd question. The longer you can go between beginning to masturbate and orgasm (your goal is 30-60 minutes) the more pleasure you will be able to give her during intercourse. (Remember, many women can't climax from vaginal stimulation alone, so you or she may need to touch her clitoris too.) It's good that you're asking these questions now, before getting married!

Also, your penis is shorter than average, but not abnormal. (Average size is between 5.25 and 5.75 inches.) Neither masturbating nor not masturbating has any effect on the length of your penis.

+1 down up

by michaeljay on October 11, 2009 at 1:26 AM

I agree with "jackette" who wrote the reply above. Also, I think your penis size is probably more in the average range regardless of what other websites might say. Be very careful of websites that give penis size information if they are trying to sell products that supposedly make your penis bigger. They are all scams.

In addition, it really depends on how you measure your penis. If you measure it along the top, it will be a shorter measurement than if you measure it along the side or along the bottom. Try laying down flat on your back and point your penis up towards your belly. Then, with a ruler, measure your erection from the tip of the penis down to the base along the underside. Measure the whole length of it that becomes hard. You will get all different measurements depending on your position and how you hold the ruler.

I have heard several times that any penis that can reach at least a couple inches, when erect, is pleanty of length to have good fertility. The chances of being able to get your wife pregnant has nothing to do with the length or width of the penis.

The semen and sperm have to get out of the body one way or another. Semen can be ejaculated through sex or masturbation. It can also come out through a "wet dream" (nocturnal emission); and it can also come out when going to the bathroom.

It will not be bad for your marriage in a physical way, but the constant building up of sexual tension you may have could cause some temporary problems like premature ejaculation when you first have sex with your wife.

I'm not sure why you stopped masturbating completely, but masturbation is a good way to release the natural sexual tension that builds up in the human body. I don't understand why you would quit masturbating but still view sex films.

The only people that should probably quit masturbating completely are those that become addicted to it, because once they start, they can't stop. It begins to interfere with their work, school, social life, or family life. A masturbation/sex addict would also have signs of masturbation/sex addiction like a sore penis, red friction burns on the penis from over-masturbating, or swelling of the sensitive areas on the penis. For this to occur, they would have to be addicted in such a way that they spend hours masturbating just about every day.

~Part 1~
There is no "danger" in not masturbating if you are male. Younger men, especially teenagers, may however experience nocturnal emissions or "wet dreams" more frequently if they don't masturbate. Many men prefer to be conscious when they experience orgasm, both to be able to better enjoy it and to be able to minimize the amount of cleaning up afterward.

(There's no danger in not masturbating for girls, either. But many women find they enjoy sex with a partner more if they already know what kind of touching they enjoy because they learned by masturbating.)

I began masturbating when I was four years old, and have continued to masturbate fairly regularly since -- though I did not recognize that what I was doing was sexual in nature until years later. I was also fortunate that when my parents discovered I was masturbating at a young age, they told me simply that I should only do it in private and in my own bedroom. (My pediatrician was apparently consulted and reassured them that masturbation at that age was unusual but not abnormal and nothing to worry about.) I was lucky... many parents even today would have punished me or even used nighttime restraints to prevent me from being able to masturbate, which would have had a profoundly negative effect on my feelings about my body and about sex lasting into adulthood.

As the article mentioned, it is possible to cause irritation in the form of raw skin due to insufficient natural lubrication. Using only a water-based lubricant is especially important once you become sexually active and need to use condoms (or another type of barrier) to prevent STD transmission and pregnancy. If your only sexual activity is masturbation, however, you have more options -- and some stores may refuse to sell a water-based "personal lubricant" to a young person.

Young men often use health/beauty care products already in the home, such as hand lotion, "cold cream" (like Noxema) or hair conditioner.

~Part 2~
(Never use shampoo or soap to masturbate unless you're in the tub or shower with water running: soap irritates genitals if left on the skin too long, especially for girls and for boys with intact foreskins.)

Petroleum jelly (Vaseline) is hard to wash off, so is best avoided unless you want to explore whether you enjoy anal/rectal stimulation (putting something like a finger in your butt).

Young women must be careful choosing a lubricant for masturbation because their genitals have more mucous membranes -- skin like the inside of the eyelid that's always moist -- than even non-circumcised young men. A good option for girls is unflavored cooking oil: olive oil, canola oil, etc. Beauty care products like baby oil, pure cocoa butter or pure aloe gel are also good choices for girls.

Any product containing alcohol (some unexpected products do, like hair gel and those disinfecting soaps you don't need to rinse off) shouldn't be used as a lubricant, because the alcohol can irritate or damage your genitals. Products with flavoring, perfume/scent and even artificial coloring should also be avoided, especially by girls, and boys will want to avoid getting such products under their foreskin -- additives like those are irritating and can cause allergic reactions. Girls also shouldn't use products with sugar (corn syrup, any ingredient ending in -ose, honey, etc.) as that can cause a yeast infection.

The easiest solution if you need additional lubrication to masturbate comfortably may simply be to do it while bathing and use plain water. Outside the bathroom, though, water will dry or flow away too fast.

Vigorous masturbation can bruise your genitals. If this happens, you may have to wait a few days for the bruise to heal before masturbating again. And you'll want to change your technique to avoid causing another bruise in the future. Usually bruises are caused by pressing, squeezing or thrusting too hard... experimentation will help you figure out what not to do.

i am a christian, and other christians make comments about how matsubation is a sin.
i guess the basis for that is that it is a sin to think lustfully about others.
the truth of the matter is, in my opinion, God made us into lustful creatures.
he knew we would be visual stimulated by other people's bodies.
better you release your tension with yourself then to have pre-marital sex, right?
however, there can be a point where masturbation occurs too often.
actually, my mom and dad got divorced when i was 8 because my dad masturbated so much that he wouldn't have sex with my mom. the divorce basically ruined my whole childhood.
sometimes she jokes that she had to strap my dad down to even make me.
if you are chronically masturbating, PLEASE for yourself and the people in your life, get help.
you don't need to feel bad or ashamed. there are people out there that can help you.

I read here that if you start masturbating, then stop, then start again and repeat, its supposed to train your body to come after a longer time of pleasure. Is that really true? Because from where I stand, that seems like impossible :P

If it does not clear up within a few days, definitely see a doctor. If the blood is just a temporary thing, the problem could be as simple as a broken blood vessel or a minor infection. However, if this blood continues for more than a few days, it could be a sign of something more serious.

Read the part where it says "masturbation is a healthy way to express and explore your sexuality and release sexual tension". Basically your answers are already answered in the article at the top. There is nothing wrong with masturbating and there is also nothing wrong with not masturbating.

Female masturbation is normal. It is very common throughout the life of a woman, but women just don't do it as often as men. Men have a stronger sex drive and the erect penis rubs aginst their clothing or the bed, etc. This is one reason why men do it more often and talk about it more often. Also, the male hormone (testosterone) causes a very strong sex drive in men. Women also have some testosterone, but not as much as men.

Sounds like you are still too young to fully ejaculate. By next year, you will be able to do it.

You probably just have to wait until you get a little bit older. You are still young. In a year or so, it will just happen. Don't worry about it.

Not sure what your eye brows have to do with masturbating? Never seen that on the list of myths from jerking off. :-P

Brownness around the eyes has nothing to do with masturbation. If masturbation was the cause of that, everyone I know would have brown color under their eyes!

Your problem is from something other than masturbation.

@ItsThatSimple -
Part 1- I am a christian as well. I just wanted to put something out there for those who believe the bible and love the Lord - I agree when you say masturbation is not inherently (in and of itself) sinful. However I disagree with your views on lust. I also disagree with your statement "God made us lustful creatures. " God created the first man PERFECT. the first woman was perfect as well. They were without sin. When they sinned against the Lord in the garden, their eyes were opened to the world. God was grieved that they had brought sin into his perfect world and condemned them to eternal spiritual death, and an eventual physical death. (Genesis 3:7-24). All that to say, God did not create us to be lustful creatures because he did not create us to be sinful and I will show you why lust is a sin here.
If you are a Christian and have a right view of sin, you would not disobey the 10 commandments, right? Consider the 7th commandment: do not commit adultery. Would you commit adultery? Think about that.
In Matthew 5:27-28, Jesus (who is part of the trinity and therefore God the Son, so we can consider Him God) says, 27 "You have heard that it was said, 'You shall not commit adultery.' 28 But I say to you that a everyone who looks at a woman with lustful intent has already committed adultery with her in his heart." (-mat. 5:27-28 ESV.)  If the Lord Jesus Christ tells us that lusting is committing adultery in our hearts, and adultery is sin, then GOD is telling us that lust is a sin. Do you need another reason to not lust?

Part 2
     So, to review:
God made us perfect (Genesis 1:26-31)
If God is perfect and made us perfect, he did not create us as sinful creatures.
MAN sinned (Genesis 3)
The 7th commandment was given saying Do not commit adultery. (Exodus 20)
Jesus says that lust is adultery in our hearts, which is sin. (Matthew 5:27-28)
Finally, to close, I have never talked to anyone that has masturbated without thinking lustfully about the opposite sex. It's impossible! Therefore, think about who you're hurting when you lust. Your future wife (because you're committing adultery in your heart) and your holy Creator!
Just as clarification, those who believe it is a sin to lust should not judge or condemn those who do-to those of you who do, I want to love you in Christ but warn you that you are sinning against a holy God and if you are not saved by Christ, you will be punished eternally.
However, this bad news is not without good news! Even though not one person is sinful (Romans 3:23)  and the result of our sin is punishment by eternal death-hell-(Romans 6:23), Jesus came to be a perfect sacrifice for our sins, so if we acknowledge that we are sinful and confess our sins to him, repent and ask for his forgiveness, he will save you and forgive you! The first great thing about this is that you will go to heaven...secondly, you will be forgiven and at peace with God! Isn't that amazing!?!?!
I hope I've caught someone's interest. I'd love to discuss God, how to be saved, or masturbation with you if you would like. If you want to discuss it more, email me at ramfanmj13@aol.com.

I'm a 18yo male and i masturbate 2 times a week and when i ejaculate a large amount comes out of my penis, so personally i believe it has to do with how often u masturbate, as that it can affect the amount produced and secreted. Hope it helps

I was 9 years old and new to masturbation.
I first became curious about sex when I accidentally fingered a carrot muffin at my sister's 15th birthday party.
My sister's name is Alexa, and she was on her period. I know this because I was on the bottom bunk... Yes, we shared a room.
It was hard for me to express my feelings of sexual desire while sharing a room with my sister. So masturbation became a daily routine after she left for school. As I was home schooled, I could rush through my school work to give me time to express myself in the only way I knew how.
For me, it was physical art: Every stroke as precious as the last and worth a thousand words.
As time progressed, so did my obsession, which soon became a fetish. For porcelaine dolls.
One day, while my sister was at school, I found her porcelain doll collection: 24 in all, everyone hand painted with great detail.
All of that work would soon be ruined by me and my desire.
As my sister returned home, I rushed to put back her dolls. Only 22 remained. For the other 2 were victims of my passion. Their stained white dresses were not something I wanted my sister to see as it would reveal my shameful act of lust.
My fetish still remains to this day. From porcelain dolls, to Woody from Toy Story (who I had named Cowboy Tom).
I am writing this message to beg for your help.
I am 19 now and have not had any healthy interpersonal relationships. I long for more than the cold embrace and detailed face of a procelain doll. I am shamed for what I did and want to change. This I cannot do on my own, hence the purpose of this post.
If there is anyone willing to help me, please reply to this message asap.

Hi Don't just worry about masturbation, people who are physically very active tend to masturbate. When you are so filled with energy and you keep your physical body quiet for long time, you tend to masturbate. Energy has to be spent, some or other way. For those, type of people, who try to control, just do some physical work, go for a long walk, that will be fine. people who give importance to your physical body, and think that you are not good at your brain, wants always to do something related to your physical body, they tend to masturbate a lot. If you know about your physical body, its easy to control, I wrote something about what mind state wil cause you to get into that mood, but, still I used to masturbate sometimes twice in a day, thrice in a week. In WHOLE OF MY LIFE SO FAR,I have been masturbating for nearly 9 yrs, and for the maximum I was able to control myself was 16 days at a strech. There is nothing wrong in masturbating, unless you don't harm others feeling. By masturbating looking at your opposite sex, some persons may not like it. Just don't do that alone, otherwise, its a thing to be enjoyed, not supressed. Go and have a blast......... :)
