Homeopathic medicine is based on the principle that like cures like, meaning that if you take a minuscule dosage of something that causes your symptoms, it will cure those symptoms. Western science has not been able to explain why using homeopathic medicine seems to have a positive effect on many people, though one theory is that it is simple self-healing. Taking homeopathic cures should be done under the care of a homeopathic practitioner, though it is possible to self-diagnose common ailments. Using homeopathic methods should never be done in place of Western medicine for serious conditions, but can be used with them.

Step 1

Write down any symptoms of ill health as soon as you notice them. Homeopathy treats the entire person, not just the ailment, so record any emotional changes like uneasiness or fear of the dark.

Step 2

Look up your symptoms in a homeopathic remedy finder. These can be found in books, or use the one in the Resource link, below.

Step 3

Find the remedy that treats as many of the symptoms you recorded as you can. The closer you get to your complete symptom group, the better the homeopathic remedy is supposed to work.

Step 4

Figure out your dosage, or potency. For a new ailment that is relatively mild, you want a potency of 6x to 10c. For a chronic illness or more serious condition, you will need a potency of 30x to 200c. This indicates the dilution of the remedy in water or alcohol. The more diluted the tincture, the stronger the effect.

Step 5

Purchase your homeopathic remedy, either at a pharmacy, health food store, online or from a homeopathic practitioner in your area.

Step 6

Shake the homeopathic pills from the bottle into its cap and then let them fall from the cap to beneath your tongue, without touching them. Allow the pills to dissolve under your tongue. Follow the dosage directions on the label. Lower potencies are usually taken anywhere from every hour to three or four times a day, while more potent dosages are usually taken one or two times per week, or even once a month.

Tips and Warnings

  • Always tell your physician and your homeopathic practitioner about any medications you may be taking.
  • Avoid alcohol, nicotine and mint for at least 20 minutes before and after taking homeopathic medicine.
