Ayurvedic Herbs for Women's Health

Ayurvedic herbs have been used to treat women in Indian tradition for centuries, according to Dr. Virender Sodhi, who believes that modern research will prove the effectiveness of ayurvedic medicine. Ayurveda is a holistic medical system that treats each woman's body type and personality in addition to the symptom that is presented. Among the herbs used to treat women's health are licorice, ashwaghanda, phyllanthus and shatavari root.

Ashwagandha

Ashwagandha is an Ayurvedic herb central to the ancient Indian healing art form. Ayurvedic teaching purports the use of this herb, and the University of Michigan states that studies have indicated its anti-stress, anti-inflammatory, anti-tumor and antioxidant properties. Additionally, the university reports that the herb is said to benefit the endocrine, cardiopulmonary and central nervous systems. Traditionally, according to the University of Michigan's Health System, the root of this herb was used medicinally and it is found in India and Africa. Ashwagandha is believed to strengthen the immune system and help the body deal with stress more effectively while promoting overall well-being.

Licorice

Licorice has been used in Ayurvedic medicinal tradition to treat urinary, genital and menopausal disorders. Though used for a variety of additional conditions, many of its uses to support women's health stem from its anti-inflammatory and antiviral properties. Licorice is used in the balancing of hormones. It is also believed to be a restorative and stimulant for the adrenal glands during the experience of menopause.

Phyllanthus

All parts of the phyllanthus are used medicinally in Ayurvedic traditions. For the support of women's health, the herb is used to treat frequent menstruation and the sexually transmitted virus gonorrhea. A general dosage recommended ranges from 900 -2700 mg per day for three months.

Shatavari Root

Shatavari root has multiple uses in Ayurvedic medicine. For women's health, this herb is used as an aphrodisiac and a natural aid for infertility. This is one of the most widely used ayurvedic herbs to treat women's health concerns. The range of female disorders addressed by shatavari root also include menstruation, menopausal symptoms and lactation. Shatavari root is a primary ingredient in many ayurvedic herbal blends for women.

Guduchi stem

Guduchi stem is a common ingredient is herbal blends to treat women's health concerns because it is a multifaceted herb that promotes an internal warming effect. Also a potent tool to treat low libido, it has a calming effect on your nervous system which ayurvedic medicine refers to as "vata". Guduchi stem boasts several additional uses including the role of a safe diuretic and anti-inflammatory agent.
