Sweating or prolonged exposure to moisture can cause foot odor. Foot odor proves both inconvenient and embarrassing. If not treated, it can become difficult to get rid of. Foot odor is generally manageable with a combination of over-the-counter products and home remedies.

Keep Feet Clean and Dry

Those who suffer from foot odor should wash their feet thoroughly when bathing . People should wash their feet daily with soap and warm water, and then dry their feet completely after washing them with a clean, dry towel. In addition to daily bathing, foot odor sufferers should wash their feet after they perspire. Keeping feet dry is important to preventing and controlling foot odor.

Manage Footwear

In addition to keeping feet clean and dry, it proves important to wear footwear that can help prevent the accumulation of perspiration. Socks made of cotton or wool prove effective in absorbing moisture. There are also commercially available socks that have a thread pattern designed to absorb moisture when exercising or in higher temperatures. The Mayo Clinic website suggests wearing footwear made of natural materials, such as leather, because they prove more effective in keeping feet dry. After wearing shoes during the day, if feet have perspired, it is likely that shoes will not dry before wearing them again the next day. Wearing the same pair of shoes from day to day may cause moisture to accumulate, creating an odor in the shoes. This odor can transfer to your feet. Rotating shoes from day to day allows shoes to dry completely before wearing them again. Allowing feet to air out, especially when relaxing at home is also helpful in keeping the temperature and perspiration levels of feet under control.

Use Over-the-Counter Products

For continued perspiration and foot odor, foot odor sufferers can apply a perfume-free antiperspirant to the soles of their feet each night. The antiperspirant blocks moisture on the skin. Do not wear socks after applying the antiperspirant to allow it to take effect and for feet to completely dry. People can purchase foot powders to help control foot odor as well. They can apply powder by sprinkling it into their shoes before wearing them, using powder as needed or until foot odor subsides.

Make Dietary Changes

Reducing or eliminating the consumption of caffeinated beverages can decrease the occurrence of sweating. Avoiding foods such as garlic or onions can also help to eliminate odor that occurs when perspiring, says the Mayo Clinic website.
