Overview
Premature ejaculation is a very common sexual disorder. When a male frequently ejaculates before he or his partner would prefer, this is considered premature ejaculation. Infrequent cases of this are normal, especially in young men.
Although the causes of premature ejaculation are not known, doctors believe that both emotional (i.e. guilt, anxiety) and biological (i.e. abnormal hormone levels, thyroid problems) factors contribute. Premature ejaculation is probably emotionally based if you have "secondary" premature ejaculation, meaning premature ejaculation has not always been a problem. Primary premature ejaculation means that this problem has existed since you first began having sexual contact (this includes masturbation).
Symptoms
While there's no standard for how long it should take a man to ejaculate, premature ejaculation is simply ejaculation prior to when the male or his partner wishes.
Treatment
There are a few things that may help. First, masturbate a few hours before intimacy with your partner. This will relieve sexual tension in the body and it will therefore take more time for arousal in the near future.
Daily Kegel exercises are another option. These exercises strengthen the PC muscles which contribute to control over the penis.
Antidepressants are sometimes prescribed because a side effect of these medications is delayed ejaculation.
You may also try the "Stop and Start" method. This technique involves sexual stimulation until the man recognizes that he is about to ejaculate. Remove stimulation for 30 seconds and then resume. Repeat until the desired moment of ejaculation is reached.
Finally, there is something called the "Squeeze Technique." This involves having your partner squeeze the penis where the head (glans) joins the shaft when you are about to ejaculate. Squeeze for 30 seconds and then resume intercourse. If the desire to ejaculate resurfaces, repeat the exercise.
Ask Your Physician
It is very important that a male and his partner have open communication if this problem exists. Premature ejaculation can put stress on a relationship and even cause fertility problems for couples trying to have a baby.
Talk to a doctor about therapy and treatments that may aid in your problem. It is estimated that one in three men have this problem, so do not feel embarrassed.
