Omeprazole, the generic of Prilosec, is a medication in a class of drugs known as proton pump inhibitors. According to Medline, prescription omeprazole is used alone or with other medications to treat ulcers, which are sores in the lining of the stomach or small intestine; gastroesophageal reflux disease, or GERD, a condition in which backward flow of acid from the stomach causes heartburn and injury of the esophagus, the tube that connects the mouth and stomach; and erosive esophagitis, which is the swelling and wearing away of the lining of the esophagus. There are some side effects of omeprazole that users should be aware of.
Headache and Dizziness
Headache and dizziness are possible side effects of omeprazole. These side effects may diminish over time as the body adjusts to this medication. Users should use caution while driving or completing tasks which may be dangerous until they know how omeprazole will affect them. If headache becomes bothersome, patients should ask their health care provider if the use of an over-the-counter pain reliever such as acetaminophen is considered safe to use.
Stomach Pain and Discomfort
Users may experience stomach pain and discomfort while taking omeprazole. Nausea, vomiting, constipation, and flatus, or gas, are possible side effects of this medication. Taking omeprazole with food or milk may reduce gastrointestinal pain and discomfort. Avoiding spicy or greasy foods and eating a bland diet may help to relieve nausea and vomiting. The addition of fruits, vegetables, fiber, and fluids to a diet may alleviate constipation. If dietary changes are unsuccessful, patients may ask their physician if the use of an over-the-counter stool softener may be used to help relieve constipation. Severe vomiting may lead to dehydration, which can be dangerous. Severe vomiting and constipation should be brought to the attention of a physician for further instruction.
Cough
Some patients taking omeprazole may experience a cough, reports Medline. Throat lozenges and honey and lemon may help soothe the throat and lessen cough. If a cough is accompanied by a rash, hives, swelling of the tongue or throat, or difficulty breathing it may be a sign of something more serious and should be brought to the attention of a physician immediately.
