Braces are a type of orthodontic device used to gradually straighten teeth over time. Straighter teeth can help improve your appearance, give you more confidence and make it easier to care for your teeth and gums. New orthodontic technologies mean that you are not limited to traditional metal braces, and there are a number of types of braces available that are virtually invisible to others.

Metal, Plastic and Ceramic Braces

The traditional metal braces consist of brackets bonded to the teeth. These brackets support a series of wires, which must be tightened by a dentist or orthodontist as your teeth shift during treatment. Today's metal braces are made from stainless steel, and are much more compact than traditional braces used in the past. According to the website of orthodontist Dr. William Trepp, the average treatment time for metal braces is 27 months.
You can also opt for braces made from ceramic or plastic. These materials are clear or tooth-colored, making them harder for others to see. According to the Colgate Company, however, these materials are susceptible to stains or discoloration over time, and require a bit of extra care. They also require a longer treatment period on average than standard metal braces.

Lingual Braces

Lingual braces consist of brackets and wires attached to the back of your teeth rather than the front. This makes them invisible to other people, and may give you more confidence in your appearance during treatment. Also known as iBraces, they require custom-fit brackets and wires, which may increase the cost of your treatment. Some users have lingual braces installed along the top row of teeth, and then use regular metal or ceramic braces on the bottom to save money while minimizing the visibility of the braces.
Lingual braces are appropriate for patients of any age, and treatment tends to take about the same amount of time as traditional metal braces.

Invisalign

The Invisalign company produces a system of braces that straighten teeth without brackets or wires. This system uses a series of plastic trays that are custom-made for each patient's teeth. The patient wears each tray for two weeks, and then switches to the next tray as teeth gradually shift into the desired location. According to American Orthodontic Associates, the average Invisalign treatment takes just 9 to 15 months.
Not only are Invisalign trays completely clear, they are also more comfortable than metal braces. They can be removed by the patient at anytime for eating, drinking or brushing teeth. With no wires or brackets to adjust, patients also spend less time in the orthodontist's office. Invisalign was once designed only for adults, but the company now produces trays for mature teens. Only those who can be trusted to keep track of trays and wear them as directed should use Invisalign.
