As part of living a green lifestyle, teach your kids ways to save the amount of water that they use. According to the Environmental Protection Agency, only 1 percent of the water on the planet is safe for people to use. Steady population growth makes it essential to conserve water.
Turning Off the Faucet
Children can be instructed to keep the faucet turned off while they are brushing their teeth. According to the Earth Institute at Columbia University, this can help save approximately 4 to 10 gallons of water each day.
Showering
If the child is old enough, he should take a shower instead of a bath. Showers use approximately 25 gallons of water, while filling up a bathtub requires approximately 70 gallons of water, states the Environmental Protection Agency. To save even more water, showers should only last approximately five minutes or less. If you do take a bath, the tub should only be partially filled.
Bottled Water
The Earth Institute at Columbia University recommends that children use refillable water bottles and keep them in the fridge for drinks. Running the faucet to allow for the water to get cold can waste water.
Hoses
Never allow the hose to run for long periods of time. Hoses in the home should come equipped with shut off valves. If the child is responsible for watering plants, she should be instructed to do so in the early morning or evening hours. Watering should never be done on cooler and rainy days. Only sprinkle the plants with water, most plants do not need to be saturated. Parents can place mulch around plants since this slows down water evaporation. Instead of using a hose to wash her car or bicycle, a bucket and sponge should be used. Hoses should not be used to clean sidewalks, decks and driveways. Brooms can be used instead.
