During colon cleaning, proponents state that you are able to remove harmful toxins from the body. With the use of certain herbal supplements, your bowels are stimulated and large amounts of fecal matter are removed. According to the Mayo Clinic, colon cleansing is unnecessary, since the body naturally eliminates waste, and may actually be dangerous.

Dehydration

One of the main concerns with colon cleaning is that the process increases your risk of dehydration. Due to the large number of bowel movements, water loss can occur. Many colon cleansing supplements recommend drinking plenty of water throughout the process to prevent this from occurring. Signs of dehydration include dizziness, extreme thirst, decreased urine output, headache, dry mouth and muscle weakness. Complications from dehydration include brain swelling, seizures, coma and death.

Stomach Upset

According to the Swedish Medical Center in Seattle, Washington, a colon cleanser that contained ingredients, such as cascara, clay and comfrey was found to produce dangerous side effects. These side effects included stomach pain, diarrhea and vomiting blood. Other side effects of colon cleansing that affect the digestive system include gas and cramping.

Electrolyte Imbalance

The Mayo Clinic states that there is a concern about the effect on electrolytes in the body when a person takes a colon cleansing supplement that contains sodium phosphate. This ingredient raises the electrolytes and can cause complications in individuals that suffer from heart and kidney disease. Individuals with medical conditions should never use colon cleansers unless otherwise advised by a doctor.

Mucus Production

When you take a colon cleaning product, you may notice strings of mucus released during your bowel movements. This effect is caused by stimulation to the intestines and can be dangerous, according to the Swedish Medical Center in Seattle, Washington. It is a sign that the body views product as a toxin and is attempting to eliminate it.
