Massages consist of rubbing and manipulating muscles, ligaments, tendons and skin. They are often performed using hands and fingers but can also be performed with feet or elbows. Leg massages can be light or deep and are sometimes used as a form of alternative medicine. They have many internal and external benefits, but the Mayo Clinic warns that they are not a substitute for regular medical care.
Stress Relief and Circulation
Massages can reduces anxiety and provide stress relief. According to Newsweek, massages reduce cortisol, a chemical in the body that is produced when you are under stress. Massages also improve circulation in the area, reduce hypertension and lower blood pressure.
Pain Relief
Aches, stiffness and pain can be relieved with a massage. According to the American Cancer Society, leg cramps that occur due to muscle tightening can be treated by massaging the cramped leg. Massages also help to soothe aching muscles. Newsweek states that massages create chemical changes that reduce pain throughout the entire body, not just the massaged area.
Improved Pregnancy
The American Pregnancy Association states that prenatal massages can reduce anxiety, relieve aches, improve labor outcomes and regulate hormone levels. Leg massages during pregnancy are especially beneficial, because pregnant women often experience swollen legs due to increased pressure on legs from the growing uterus. The American Pregnancy Association also suggests finding a professional certified in prenatal massages, because pressure points near the ankles can stimulate the uterus and cause contractions.
Other Benefits
Northwestern Health Sciences University states that kneading the thigh area during a leg massage can improve thigh appearance and minimize cellulite. Restless leg syndrome, characterized by a tingling and prickling sensation in the legs, can be relieved by gently massaging the calf. According to Newsweek, regular massages can help premature babies gain weight and boost immunity.
