The thyroid gland is on the front of the neck below the thyroid cartilage and produces hormones that regulate metabolism. According to ScumDoctor.com, the thyroid is important in stimulating energy in the body, activating the body's use of other hormones and vitamins, and is vital to the growth and maturation of body tissues. The thyroid gland's function is boosted with certain herbs that also positively impact symptoms related to various thyroid conditions.

Seaweed

The first condition to identify when looking at thyroid health is your iodine levels. Herbal treatment for hypothyroidism, or an underactive thyroid, is typically linked to a deficiency in iodine, as noted on ScumDoctor.com. Kelp is a type of seaweed that is rich in iodine, and therefore beneficial for thyroid function. Another type of seaweed called dulse is rich in protein and iodine, and helps the thyroid to function naturally.

Bugleweed

The flowers and leaves of the bugleweed herb are commonly used for thyroid health, according to Health & Beauty Base. Bugleweed is a part of the mint family and contains active ingredients that decrease certain hormone levels in the body, including hormones that stimulate the thyroid gland. Bugleweed prevents the deterioration of hyperthyroidism, or an overactive thyroid, when 1 to 2g of the entire herb are consumed per day.

Lemon Balm

According to Herbwisdom.com, lemon balm is used in Europe for treating thyroid problems and helps regulate thyroid hormone production. Lemon balm extract is used to stabilize an overactive thyroid as it keeps the antibodies that cause the condition from attaching to thyroid gland receptors. Lemon balm is considered a mild sedative and may gently help regulate thyroid-stimulating hormones and overall thyroid function.
