The drug Kaletra helps fight the human immunodeficiency virus, known as HIV, by inhibiting proteins vital to the virus' life cycle. The drug has many side effects, some of which can be lethal. The common and more benign side effects of Kaletra include diarrhea, nausea, abdominal pain, weakness, vomiting, headache and upset stomach. You can combat the diarrhea caused by Kaletra in several ways, most of which involve dietary changes.

Step 1

Drink plenty of fluid. If you have diarrhea, you should first and foremost avoid dehydration by drinking a lot of fluid. Good fluids to drink include water and sports drinks with electrolytes.

Step 2

Eat more fiber. Increasing the fiber in your diet will increase the bulk in your stools and make them less watery.

Step 3

Eat rice, dry toast and bananas. These foods are known to help alleviate diarrhea.

Step 4

Consume probiotics---foods that contain beneficial bacteria. Probiotics can soothe your colon and shorten the duration of a diarrhea attack. If your immune system is compromised because of AIDS, consult your doctor before introducing any bacteria, even those that are normally good, into your system.

Step 5

Take over-the-counter diarrhea medications. Consult your physician and pharmacist before taking these medications to ensure that you are healthy enough for them and that they will not react with any HIV medications you are taking.
