1. Extra Weight Means Extra Wear and Tear
Excess weight can cause a variety of problems. Osteoarthritis just happens to be on that list. The more weight that we carry, the more load and pressure are put on our joints. Extra weight just means extra pressure being put on joints, such as knees. This in turn causes a breakdown of cartilage in these joints. Research shows that the breakdown of cartilage in individuals who are obese may eventually lead to osteoarthritis.
2. Contact Sports can Lead to Excessive Joint Damage
Playing a contact sport such as football or soccer puts you at a great risk of a variety of injuries. Many of them are usually visual, but one that is not is osteoarthritis. Athletes who have done significant damage to their knees and joints from injury, excess use or surgery of the joints start to develop a breakdown of cartilage in the joints. This constant damage has been shown to lead to the development of osteoarthritis.
3. Getting Older
Many older individuals develop some form of arthritis. Not to be excluded is osteoarthritis. The body over time naturally begins to wear and break down. This can also be said of our joints and the condition we see them today as compared to years and years earlier. Taking precautions to take care of our bodies as we age should be a major priority.
4. Strengthen Muscles to Avoid Osteoarthritis
When muscles around a joint become weakened it not only affects the muscles but the joint and surrounding area. This weakening causes the joint area to become less flexible and more susceptible to injury or development of osteoarthritis. Getting regular exercise such as walking or starting a weight resistance program should help in keeping muscles strong and avoiding injury.
5. Eat for Good Health
In the world that we live in where it seems we are always on the go, proper rest and nutrition seems to take a backseat. Often neglecting one or both of these can lead to not only illness but injury as well. Research has shown that bad nutrition can be a possible cause toward the development of osteoarthritis. Our bodies need certain nutrients to keep going at an optimal level and keep our immune systems as strong as possible. Watch not only how much you eat, but what you eat as well. Give your body exactly what it needs to keep functioning at the best possible level.
