Smart Shopping for Snorkels

A snorkel is the breathing tube that is used during snorkeling or scuba diving. In snorkeling, it is the primary method for underwater breathing. Divers use snorkels during intermediate parts of their dive--such as when swimming to dive locations or waiting for the boat to pick them up--to conserve the air in their tanks. On average, snorkels cost $25 to $30, but go as low as $5 and as high as $45. Prices depend on the snorkel's materials and additional features.

What to Look for

Snorkels come in many lengths. Look for one that travels from your mouth to the top of your head. A snorkel that is too long is harder to breath through, and one that is too short is easily flooded. Additionally, the tube of your snorkel should be semirigid, so if you
were to collide with something, it would absorb some of the shock. The bore or diameter of the snorkel is also important. Look for a snorkel that has a diameter of about 2 cm. An oversize bore will let in extra water, and a small bore will be difficult to breathe through.
Another thing to take into account is the mouthpiece. Cheaper snorkels have a mouthpiece made from PVC, which is uncomfortable. Instead, choose one made from liquid silicone, which better conforms to the mouth. Also, these mouthpieces are hypoallergenic and better for people with sensitive skin. Snorkels with liquid silicone mouthpieces fall into the average price range.
You also might want to consider a snorkel with a purge valve, which is a one-way flap in the bottom of the snorkel that allows for easy clearance of water. Most moderately priced snorkels come with purge valves. If you are a serious diver, look for a dry snorkel, which won't let any water in. These snorkels fall into the higher price range.

Common Pitfalls

Many people try to save money by purchasing a cheap snorkel. Low-end snorkels have mouthpieces made from PVC, which are less comfortable, are more likely to leak and must be replaced sooner. Additionally, PVC mouthpieces compromise the performance of the snorkel. They are harder to breathe through and make the overall snorkeling or diving experience less enjoyable. For a little more money, you can find a snorkel with a silicone mouthpiece, which will have fewer problems.
