Whether you're an advanced golfer or have just picked up a club for the first time, the golf swing is the foundation for your game. Without a good swing the game of golf can quickly descend into an exercise in frustration. A good golf swing can add distance to your drives and make you the envy of the course.
The Grip
The way you hold the club can greatly impact your swing, according to GolfSwingTips.com. There are many grips in play, from the interlocking grip to the baseball grip. The website recommends you use an interlocking grip where the index finger of your left hand and the little finger of your right hand interlock on the club. Golf Swing Tips says this grip will help you achieve maximum distance with your swing.
The Stance
When addressing the ball, your feet should be about shoulder-width apart with the toes of both feet pointing slightly away from the ball. The website recommends you place about 70 percent of your body's weight on your back leg and stand with as little tension as possible in your upper body. Bend both knees slightly and keep your eyes on the ball throughout your swing. Grip the club as if you were holding something delicate like an egg or small bird. Hold it tight enough to hold the bird or egg but not tight enough to crush it.
The Backswing
During your backswing, your left arm should remain straight and your upper body should rotate in the direction of the backswing. GolfSwingTips.com says some golfers have a rapid backswing, while others move through the backswing more slowly. They recommend following whatever is comfortable for your individual game. Golf Swing Tips says you should keep you feet planted throughout the backswing and notes a majority of golf swing problems are caused by moving too fast in the backswing. This negates the ability to speed up your swing through the ball.
The Downswing
According to Golf Swing Tips 4U, one of the most important tips for your downswing is to keep your head stationary throughout the motion. It recommends your head remain behind the ball throughout the full swing until the follow-through. Try not to use your front hand to get more power, it says, since the majority of your power will come from the angle between your wrists and the golf club. This angle should be maintained throughout the downswing, they say. Make sure your downswing is a fluid, controlled motion. Rotate your hips through the ball, while keeping your eyes on the ball throughout the downswing.
