Bach flower remedies were developed by Dr. Edward Bach in the early 1900s. He researched thousands of flowers and settled on 38 that he believed were essential in supporting emotional well-being. Case studies from the Bach Centre website and Barbara Mazzarella, author of Bach Flower Remedies for Children, support the effectiveness of Bach flower essences when used with children for a wide variety of common mental and emotional needs.
Fears
Bach flower remedies gently support children in developing courage when they are overwhelmed by fear. Aspen is very helpful for children who fear the dark, abandonment, and being left alone. When combined with rock rose and mimulus, it supports children experiencing nightmares. Rock rose by itself encourages calm for children fearing new experiences or witnessing difficult situations.
Anxiety
News of wars, bombings, and accidents create a great deal of anxiety for children. Additionally, many worry about the safety of their parents and have a heightened sense of responsibility. Red chestnut is a flower essence recommended for children who worry more about others than themselves, take on an adult sense of responsibility, and are very protective of others. Agrimony is supportive for children who hold their anxieties in while presenting a joyful outer image. Their anxieties come out through nail biting, hair twirling, or scratching of their skin.
Balance
Many children struggle with issues of balance, physically and emotionally. This may show itself through difficulty with gross motor skills, discomfort with movement, or quickly changing moods. Scleranthus supports children in feeling grounded and stable. When combined with the Bach product called Rescue Remedy, it can also prevent and treat symptoms of carsickness.
Attention
Children who struggle with paying attention to task can be supported with flower essences. Clematis helps children who often appear to be off in their own world daydreaming. Combined with scleranthus, it provides a sense of groundedness and connection with the present moment.
Crying
Children cry for many reasons, and flower essences provide gentle support through difficult times. For children who are hysterical and difficult to console, cherry plum is the appropriate remedy. Holly supports children feeling angry and irritable. When whining and temper tantrums are present, chicory is recommended. Vervain helps children who are disappointed while pine eases feelings of guilt or blame. Star of Bethlehem is recommended for children experiencing trauma and abuse as well as those who appear weak and submissive.
Jealousy
Sibling rivalry or competing for attention with peers can lead to feelings of envy or jealousy. Holly effectively supports these feelings and helps children feel they are enough just as they are. For children who imitate others in attempts to gain what they have, cerato is the recommended remedy.
Depression
Flower essences effectively support the emotional needs of children experiencing depression for a variety of reasons. Sweet chestnut eases feelings of anguish and hopelessness. Gentian is effective for feelings of sadness, despair, and grief. Gorse supports children in extremely difficult situations who also exhibit physical symptoms, such a pale skin and hollow eyes.
Warning
Bach flower essences are effective in supporting a range of emotional needs for children. However, parents and caregivers should take due care in consulting with medical and mental health professionals when a child exhibits more extreme needs.
