Brown spots on the skin are caused by overexposure to the sun and environmental toxins. These factors cause excessive melanin production in the skin, worsening as we age. Brown spots are referred to as liver spots or age spots and can occur on the face, hands, feet and legs. There are many over-the-counter remedies, such as bleaching creams and alpha hydroxy products, that will help eliminate these spots. However, there are also many home remedies that can provide the same benefits as over-the-counter remedies.

Step 1

Apply the juice from one lemon to brown spots one to two times daily. Lemon juice is a natural bleaching agent that breaks down melanin overproduction, lightening brown skin spots. According to an excerpt from "The Doctors Book of Home Remedies," Jerome Z. Litt, MD, assistant clinical professor of dermatology at Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine in Cleveland, states that lemon juice is acidic enough to safely remove the topmost layer of skin to help remove age spots, as well.

Step 2

Cut a slice of red onion and rub into the affected area. Onion has the same acidic properties as lemon juice and is also a natural bleaching agent. Mixing equal amounts of onion juice and vinegar makes an effective spot treatment as well. Vinegar is also acidic and provides and antiseptic property to fight free radicals in the skin.

Step 3

Apply castor oil with a cotton ball to the brown spots, especially when accompanied by lesions. This will speed up the healing process while fading discoloration. Larger spots may require a bandage left on overnight to speed up absoprtion into the skin, according to Michael Ramsey, MD, clinical instructor of dermatology at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston.

Step 4

Rub mashed garbanzo beans onto the affected area of skin. Garbanzo beans are used to lighten the skin without overbleaching it. They break down melanin overproduction, allowing the skin pigmentation to distrubute evenly and fade brown spots.

Things You'll Need

  • Juice from 1 lemon
  • 1 onion
  • Vinegar
  • Castor oil
  • Garbanzo Beans
