The Best Over-the-Counter Acne Products

Ance is the most common skin problem affecting people in today's society. Close to 50 million Americans suffer from acne. Acne can be a nuisance due to its ability to create scars and red bumps. There is a variety of acne treatments available that can reduce the severity, most of which include over-the-counter products.

Salicylic Acid

Salicylic acid helps prevent pores from clogging and creating acne by slowing down the shedding of cells inside the hair follicles. According to Skincarephysicians.com, it can also break down blackheads, which are pores that have a dark surface and are open, and whiteheads, which are clogged pores that do not have an opening. Over-the-counter acne products are available with a 0.5 percent to 2 percent salicylic acid, which is effective in treating noninflammatory acne lesions. It also helps correct abnormal shedding and unclogs pores to prevent lesions. Salicylic acid needs to be continuously used, because once you stop, the acne will return. Salicylic acid can be found in creams, pads and lotions.

Benzoyl Peroxide

Benzoyl peroxide is known to be the most effective active ingredient found in acne products. According to MayoClinic.com, benzoyl peroxide removes dead skin cells responsible for clogging pores and also kills P. acnes and removes dead skin cells in order to prevent comedones. Benzoyl peroxide can be found in a gel or lotion.

Alpha Hydroxy Acids

Latic acid and glycolic acid are the two types of alpha hydroxy acids used in over-the-counter products to treat acne. These acids are derived from fruits that contain sugar. They help in treating acne by assisting to reduce inflammation and also helping to remove dead skin cells.
