Tooth pain may occur if acids and bacteria eat away at the enamel of your teeth, causing a cavity. If you experience tooth pain, make a dentist appointment immediately. If you must wait several days for your appointment, use home remedies to manage the pain until you are able to see a dentist for treatment.

Cloves

Oil of cloves may help temporarily reduce tooth pain in an emergency situation, says the Mayo Clinic. Apply two drops of clove essential oil on a cotton ball, then place the cotton ball in the mouth, between the aching tooth and the cheek, recommends home remedy website, Health911.com. Leave the cotton ball in the mouth to help numb the pain of a toothache. Change the cotton ball as necessary throughout the day.

Salt

Salt may help numb discomfort in the mouth caused by tooth pain, says Philip D. Corn, D.D.S., director of the Pennsylvania Academy of General Dentistry. Place 1 teaspoon of salt in an 8-ounce glass of room-temperature water and stir to mix. Take a mouthful of the mixture and carefully swish it in your mouth and over the tooth, then spit it out. Continue swishing with the rest of the mixture, and repeat as needed to reduce pain.

Ice

Applying pressure and ice to the hand may help reduce pain associated with a toothache. Press the web of flesh between your thumb and forefinger, says Ronald Melzack, Ph.D., former president of the International Association for the Study of Pain. Place an ice cube on the flesh between the thumb and forefinger for 5 to 7 minutes to help reduce pain.
Additionally, sucking on ice may help numb the pain. If the tooth is particularly sensitive, do not apply the ice directly to the tooth, but on the gums and cheek. Sucking on ice will help cool down the mouth and reduce overall pain due to a toothache.
