The foods produced today can be deceiving when it comes to quality. They may be the freshest produce on the market, but what have they been exposed to during the growing process? Many have been grown in soil, laden with fertilizers. Others have been sprayed with pesticides or chemicals to keep them looking fresh throughout their passage to the market. Many of these toxins are harmful to the body and cause slow deterioration of tissues and organs. The Detox Diet is a terrific way to eliminate some of these toxins by flushing them from the system.
What to Look for
One of the easiest ways to eliminate chemicals from your diet is to buy organic. But what about the toxins that are already in your body from years of eating foods that contain them? Fresh and frozen fruits and vegetables are at the top of the Detox lists of foods to eat to get rid of toxins. Vegetables like cauliflower, broccoli, beets, and onions are some of the best options. Whole-grain foods are also high on the list. Look for packaged foods that contain unprocessed brown rice, and other grains. Some companies use only organic ingredients in their products. Look for them. And always read labels.
Common Pitfalls
When you buy from a supermarket, you never know what foods have been through before they arrive there. The Detox Diet relies on fresh fruits and vegetables. Start checking into local produce or farmer's markets. They will have the freshest of produce and will also be able to tell you for the most part, what, if any chemicals or pesticides were used on their produce. When buying meat, purchase it straight from the local butcher and buy in bulk. Once again, the meat will be fresh, and in many cases, you can find out what the animal was fed. Was it a commercial feed or were the animals allowed to roam freely? Dairy can also be purchased this way, without the risk of being contaminated with human growth hormone.
