Smart Shopping for Enzymes

Enzymes are found everywhere in the human body. One of the areas they are most abundant is in the digestive tract. They help to break down every food we put into our bodies, including fats, starches and proteins. Enzymes naturally occur in foods like yogurt, papaya and pineapple. They can also be obtained by eating papaya tablets or digestive enzymes. Most can be purchased at a health food store and are easily incorporated into the diet. Always use supplements in moderation so that the body does not begin to slow its own processes and force you to continue supplementing.

What to Look for

Yogurt has a high concentration of enzymes and comes in many flavors and sizes. Try to buy the brands that are natural with few preservatives. Avoid yogurts that are lower in fat because the extra processing can reduce the amount of enzymes and other nutrients.

When buying fruit, it can either be bought fresh (which is recommended), in tablet form, or as a dried fruit product. The tablet forms are the easiest to eat on the go. Dried papaya and pineapple are also convenient but they tend to be higher in sugar. They make an excellent short-term energy snack. Fruit contains enzymes (for example: pectin) that speed up the ripening process. As the pectins work, they break down the fibers in the fruit and cause it to soften. This in turns allows the body to digest the food quickly for a sharp burst of energy.

When looking for supplements, do some research. Supplements can be an excellent way of getting the enzymes you need when you are on the go. Look for brands that are all natural. Many times when buying a digestive enzyme supplement they will also have included amino acid complex and other vitamins. Make sure you are not overdoing it if you already take a multivitamin-mineral complex.

Common Pitfalls

Many enzymes are neutralized when consumed with hot foods or beverages. It's best to take them either an hour before or an hour after a meal. Enzymes are also neutralized when they come in contact with certain forms of acids. This should be mentioned on the label of any enzyme supplement. When taking the supplement form, be careful not to overdo it. If the body knows the enzymes are going to be there, it will decrease the production of the enzymes it produces. Take the enzymes in moderation and allow the body to function for itself. If you have digestive problems that cause you to rely on supplements more than necessary, consult your physician.
