Trazadone is classified as a tetracyclic antidepressant. It is used to treat tremors, anxiety disorders and depression. Trazadone may also be used in the treatment of some phobias and pain disorders. It can be used as a sedative as well. Trazadone is the generic name for the drug Desyrel. Trazadone can only be obtained with a prescription.

What Trazodone Is

Trazodone is an oral antidepressant. It is normally prescribed in the treatment of depression, anxiety and panic attacks. It has also been used as a sedative. Because of the way trazodone works, it is sometimes used to control erratic or aggressive behavioral problems.
Trazodone is taken in pill form and can only be obtained with a prescription. Trazodone is the generic equal of the brand Desyrel.

HowTrazodone Works

Trazodonen works by affecting the neurotransmitters in the brain. Neurotransmitters are the chemical messengers that send signals between the nerves in the brain. Dopamine, serotonin and norepinephrine are all neurotransmitters. Trazodone inhibits the nerves in the brain from assimilating serotonin. This allows serotonin to stimulate other nerves in the body.

Dosages

Trazodone is prescribed in dosage amounts ranging from 50 mg to 300 mg, depending on the disorder and the severity of the symptoms. The usual starting dose for adults is trazodone is 150 mg. It can be given in one dose or several doses through out the day. Dosages may have to be adjusted over time, depending on how a person reacts to it.
Trazodone is not a fast-acting medication. It may take several weeks to notice any difference in the symptoms.

Possible Side Effects

Trazodone has several reported side effects. Abdominal pain and stomach disorders are common. Vomiting, diarrhea and constipation may accompany abdominal pain. Aches and pains in the joints and muscles are also common. Confusion, irritability, headache and nervousness may also be possible. In some cases, fainting, light-headedness and dizziness have been reported.

Severe Reactions

Trazodone may also cause mood swings, hostility, anger and nervousness. It can also disrupt sleep patterns and cause nightmares. In rare cases, usually in those with severe psychiatric disorders, suicidal thoughts and behaviors may be exhibited. All severe side effects should be reported to the prescribing doctor immediately.
