Water retention can happen for a variety of reasons. Women are more likely to suffer because of their menstrual cycle but it also affects men. Hot weather, standing and medical conditions involving the major organs are the most likely causes of water retention, but you may may also retain water because of high-sodium food. However, there are some foods that you can eat to beat the bloat.

Lemon Juice or Chili Sauce

Instead of adding salt to food, add lemon juice or low-sodium chili sauce instead. You could also try different spices. Parsley is an excellent bloat-buster.

Fruits and Vegetables

Diuretic fruits such as melons and oranges are rich in potassium, which balances your sodium levels and helps release water. Also, try vegetables such as celery, cucumber, lettuce, peppers, carrots and onions, which work on the same principle for a healthy fluid balance. Many fruits and vegetables also have a high water content, and the more water you take in the less your body retains---another reason to make them part of your daily diet. Fruits and vegetables also supply minerals and vitamins, which are essential for organic balance. Their high fiber content prevents constipation, which can exacerbate water retention.

Carbohydrates

For some people, wheat is one of the most bloat-causing foods. If you find that your stomach always looks bigger after eating wheat, you may have a wheat intolerance, in which case you need to speak to your doctor. Whole rice, buckwheat, rye and other whole grains are rich in magnesium, potassium, selenium, and antiwater--retention minerals.

Fish

Eating fish such as salmon, tuna or sardines twice a week will help to beat the bloat. Try to substitute your red meat intake for fish as they also provide polyunsaturated fatty acids to produce prostaglandins, which regulate organic liquids. Avoid anchovies and other salty fish as they will only exacerbate your problem and opt for organic, farmed salmon or other organic, farmed fish to reduce the risk of water retention.

White Meat

Turkey and chicken are rich in protein, which causes the liver to produce albumin, which naturally slows water retention. The protein also stimulates the thyroid gland, which is responsible for your metabolism.
