Jiujitsu is a fighting system that was developed in Japan for warfare from the 12th to the 19th centuries. It has since become a martial art that is widely practiced all over the world. Jiujitsu teaches numerous techniques that can help you subdue or escape from an attacker. For example, jiujitsu teaches self-defense maneuvers against single wrist grabs, double wrist grabs, shirt grabs and full nelsons.
Single Wrist-Grab Defense
There are many circular techniques used in jiujitsu. One of these techniques can be used against an attacker who is grabbing you by the wrist. If an attacker grabs your right wrist with his right hand, then you can move your right hand to the left in a clockwise motion. Bring your palm up so it is toward your face. To break the grip, thrust your hand down to the right.
Double Wrist-Grab Defense
If an attacker grabs you by both wrists, you can use a jiujitsu wrist lock on him. When the attacker is holding both wrists, turn your right palm out to the side so your fingers are pointed upward. Quickly twist your left wrist inward and up to break the attacker's grip on this wrist. Place your left thumb on the back of his left hand and grab his wrist with your left hand. Use your thumb to put pressure on the back of his hand and execute a wrist lock. As the attacker loosens his grip on your right wrist, put your right thumb on the back of his hand to increase the intensity of the wrist lock.
Shirt-Grab Defense
Jiujitsu teaches several defenses against shirt grabs. If an attacker grabs you by the shirt collar with his right hand, you can use your left arm to trap his arm. Swing your left arm in a counterclockwise, hooking motion over his arm. Place your arm under his arm to lock it in place. Place your other hand on his throat. Step across the front of his body with your right leg and sweep the back of his right leg with your leg. Put pressure on the attacker's throat to force him to the ground.
Full-Nelson Defense
A full nelson can be a difficult hold to escape. A full nelson presents a challenge because it is executed from behind you. The attacker puts his arms under your arms and places his hands firmly behind your neck. To escape the full nelson, you can use a jiujitsu takedown. Forcefully thrust your arms down to your sides to break the attacker's grip. Swing your right leg behind the attacker and grab the backs of his knees with your hands. Pull the attacker's legs out from underneath him to take him to the ground.
