Colon cleansing and colon cleanse products have grown in popularity over the past few years. Many physicians and health-care practitioners question the validity and safety of the colon cleanse process. However, some holistic and natural-health practitioners believe that periodic cleansing is essential to colon health and overall well being. A variety of herbal remedies are believed to be effective in cleansing the colon. Contact a health-care professional before using any herbal remedy.
Slippery Elm
Slippery elm is believed to have colon cleansing abilities. According to "Prescriptions for Nutritional Healing," by James F. Balch, M.D., and Phyllis A. Balch, C.N.C, slippery elm is useful in removing excess waste from the colon and is effective in reducing inflammation. This herb is available in tea form and may also be used as an enema if faster results are desired.
Coffee Enema
According to "Prescriptions for Nutritional Healing," and "Herbal Medicine," by Dian Dincin Buchman, Ph.D, a coffee enema also is believed to be an effective method for cleansing the colon. This type of cleanse is believed to be very effective at removing toxins after an illness or toxins that have been picked up due to exposure to hazardous chemicals. Coffee enemas can be used to cleanse the liver as well as the colon. This powerful enema solution is made by adding 6 tbsp. of coffee to 2 qts. of steam-distilled water. The solution should then be boiled for 15 minutes, allowed to cool and then strained. Use 1 pt. of the mixture in the enema bag. The rest can be refrigerated and used at a later time. Hold the solution in for a few minutes and expel.
Flaxseed
Another herbal remedy for cleansing the colon is flaxseed. According to poopdoc.com, the high fiber content found in flaxseed makes it an effective and natural colon cleanser. Flaxseed is safe to use on a regular basis to prevent constipation and aid in colon function. There are also believed to be many other benefits to consuming flaxseed, and it is a source of protein, vitamins and Omega-3 fatty acids. One disadvantage to using flaxseed is that results may be slow if you are suffering from constipation. In this case, it is recommended that a faster acting remedy, such as the coffee enema, be used to remove excessive waste from the system. Flaxseed can then be used as a supplement to maintain optimal colon function and prevent the re-occurrence of constipation.
