Plantar fasciitis is an inflammation of the connective tissue that runs along the bottom of your foot. Typical symptoms include pain on the bottom of the heel and the arch of the foot that increases in severity in the morning or after long bouts of inactivity such as sitting. Good shoes can be a key component in treating plantar fasciitis; consult with a podiatrist as to what specific shoe features are right for you.
Inflexible Sole
Look for shoes that have an inflexible sole--that do not bend in the middle at the arch. This is particularly important for athletic shoes. Since many runners experience plantar fasciitis symptoms, athletic shoes designed specifically for running are your best bet. New Balance, Saucony and Asics are three leading brands to consider.
Good Arch Support
Shoes for plantar fasciitis sufferers should have moderate to high arches, depending on the shape of your foot--some people have flat feet or fallen arches, and too high an arch will be uncomfortable, while others have high arches and need extra support.
Raised Heel
A slightly raised heel often helps relieve some of the tension on the plantar fascii ligaments along the bottom of the foot. Do not go above about one inch of elevation, however.
Shock Absorption
Shoes with cushioned heels or other shock-absorbing features built into the sole can help relieve the pressure and pain of plantar fasciitis. Cork footbeds, gel inserts and foam padding are among the features to look for.
Orthotic Friendly
Another footwear option is to purchase a pair of shoes that can accept orthotic inserts, either custom or over the counter. These shoes will either need to have a removable footbed or feature extra depth. Dansko, Airflex, Clark's and Kumfs are among the many shoe brands that fit this requirement.
