Yoga and Pilates are mind-body exercise programs often done at home, in studios or in fitness centers. The proper mat enhances your experience in either program's class. Although they may be interchanged, each type of mat possesses specific features that are better suited to the discipline for which each was designed.
Yoga Mats
Yoga is an ancient exercise regimen consisting of a series of poses that open up energy zones and enhance flexibility and strength. Yogis use "sticky" mats which feature a surface that helps you attain a better grip with your hands and feet. Yoga mats are comprised of latex, bamboo, cotton, rubber or microfiber. Yoga mats range from a very thin 3 mm to a plush 6 mm thickness. Yoga mats measure 24 by 68 inches but are also available in extra-long 74-inch sizes.
Pilates Mats
Pilates is a series of exercises focusing on the muscles of the abdominals, back and hips developed in the 1920s by German immigrant Joseph Pilates. Many mat Pilates exercises are executed while lying on your back or on your abdomen. A thicker mat makes exercise more comfortable. Pilates mats range from 72 to 86 inches long and from 21 to 39 inches wide. They are usually at least a half inch thick to provide padding for rolling exercises. Pilates mats are usually made of foam or rubber, and the best ones feature a closed-cell construction which provides a thicker surface.
Cost
Yoga mats are available in almost any sports store selling sporting goods and at a number of sites online. As of 2010, prices range from $15 to over $100, depending on the material, size and brand. Pilates mats range in price from $20 to $50. Pilates mats that offer a built-in fastening strap, carrier or a fancy brand-name come with a higher price tag.
Function
A sticky yoga mat enhances your ability to properly perform standing poses---specifically lunges and balance poses. A thin yoga mat helps your feet feel connected to the floor, providing more stability. If your yoga practice emphasizes seated postures, a thicker mat may be more comfortable. If you have sensitivities to latex or are eco-conscious, you may be particular about the specific material from which your mat is constructed. In Pilates, a soft, thick mat helps pad your tailbone and spine when doing "roll-ups" and the "seal." Choose a mat that is easily transported if you plan on working out in a fitness center or studio.
Considerations
While cheap mats are readily available, attention to the quality of your mat will help improve your overall Pilates or yoga experience. A high-quality sticky mat allows you to focus on the poses rather than worry about slipping and sliding. In Pilates, an inadequate mat may actually prevent you from being able to carry out a number of the exercises because of spine or tailbone pain.
