If you are looking to incorporate maca herb into your diet, you should also be aware of the potential side effects associated with the supplement prior to consumption. According to the University of Michigan Health System, maca herb is traditionally prescribed for the treatment of infertility in males. Widely available in local supermarkets and drug stores, maca is often found in pill, powder or liquid extract form.

Effects on the Thyroid

One of the major complications or side effects associated with maca herb supplements involves the thyroid gland. According to the University of Michigan Health System, maca powder has been known to cause goiter--otherwise known as a thyroid gland swelling condition due to decreased activity of the gland--in patients following consumption of foods that promote a drop in iodine within the blood. These effects on iodine have been seen in patients taking maca herb as a dietary supplement, according to a study discussed on the UMHS website. While no direct ties have been documented between maca and goiter development, patients currently suffering from thyroid issues should stay away from the supplement.

Increased Sex Drive

Another side effect seen with maca herb consumption is an increase in sex drive. While this may not be seen as a negative effect for most patients, the UMHS does list the increase in libido as a reaction separate from fertility assistance. Preliminary studies listed on the website suggest that similar effects have been noticed in other trials associated with the herb, including an increase in libido for lab rats and other test subjects. As a result of this effect, it would be wise to check with your doctor to see if you are healthy enough for sex prior to consuming the herbal supplement.

Insomnia

Another side effect that you can experience after taking maca herb is insomnia due to increased energy. According to PhysicianFormulas.com, maca herb has been shown to increase energy and excitement in individuals using the herb for the treatment of minor health disorders, such as infertility. As a result, patients have reported the inability to rest due to insomnia and overstimulation, especially after prolonged use of the supplement. According to the website, these side effects can increase when the supplement is taken with other herbs, such as ginseng and horny goat weed.
