Remedies to Lower Blood Sugar

Increased blood sugar is often caused by diabetes Mellitus, a condition where the pancreas cannot produce enough insulin or the body has a resistance to insulin. Insulin is a hormone that regulates sugar in the blood. Other situations can cause an increase in blood sugar, such as eating large amounts of sugar, stress from surgery or an infection. Lowering blood sugar is important because there are many complications to hyperglycemia, or high blood sugar. Some complications include blurred vision, fatigue, infection or frequent urination.

Exercise

Exercise is one of the most effective ways to lower blood sugar. Before beginning an exercise regimen, one must consult their doctor. When exercise begins, the liver releases stored glucose. Your muscles then absorb this glucose from the blood, using it for energy, thus lowering blood sugar. Daily exercise is the key to stabilizing blood glucose levels, but should not be done excessively. Start slow by walking 20 minutes a day, and gradually increase time and intensity.

Low Glycemic Foods

Consuming a diet primarily containing low glycemic foods will help lower blood sugar. The glycemic index measures how a food increases blood sugar. Foods high in sugar and carbohydrates rank higher than foods with more protein, fat or fiber. According to the American Diabetes Association, foods that are highly processed, usually have a higher glycemic index. Eating fresh fruits instead of fruit juices, whole wheat bread instead of white and plenty of protein will ensure blood sugar levels stay in

Herbs

Many herbs decrease blood sugar. According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, in a clinical study of 60 people with type 2 diabetes, intake of cinnamon reduced glucose, triglyceride, LDL cholesterol and total cholesterol. Ginseng is thought to lower blood sugar, especially when consumed with a high glucose meal. Fenugreek seed is a high fiber herb. According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, the high fiber content of fenugreek seeds may help control blood sugar if a person has diabetes.
