In Ayurveda, the traditional Indian herbal medicinal practice, turmeric is used to warm and strengthen the body. It is a powerful antibacterial and anti-fungal that helps improve digestion, eliminate worms, cleanse the gallbladder and liver, purify the blood and relieve swelling due to its anti-inflammatory properties. Making turmeric milk is a traditional way of receiving the medicinal benefits of this herb, and generally includes a mixture of turmeric and milk.

Respiratory Tract Infections

Turmeric is a powerful antioxidant that is considered more potent that vitamin C, according to acupuncturist Michael Tierra in his book "The Way of Chinese Herbs." It is also highly warming and anti-inflammatory, which helps soothe irritated mucous membranes of the throat, bronchial tube and lungs. It will also help fight infection, according to Candy Sagon in her article titled "To Help Fight Flu, Some Opt for a Shot of Tradition." As turmeric opens congested bronchioles, it helps relieve the symptoms of asthma. By taking turmeric milk, you instantly receive turmeric's healing benefits and can expect results within the day for coughs, bronchitis and the flu, and within a month for asthma.

Arthritis

One of turmeric's main constituents is curcumin which is responsible for its yellow color. Curcumin is also thought to be the primary anti-inflammatory component in turmeric, says Maya Tiwari, author of the book "Ayurveda Secrets of Healing." This property makes turmeric especially helpful when treating swelling caused by rheumatoid and osteoarthritis as it not only reduces inflammation, but increases ligament flexibility. Take turmeric milk twice daily before meals to help with your arthritic condition.

Cancer

According to Tierra, turmeric's high antioxidant properties render it useful in fighting any type of cancer. He says that based on statistical research, 1/2 tsp. a day of turmeric mixed in with milk prevents the deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) damage that is caused by cancer cells.
Turmeric also helps fight the symptoms of chemotherapy that is undergone as a treatment for cancer by helping with digestion, cleansing the blood, and boosting your body's immune system. Always consult with your physician before taking any herbal supplements while undergoing medical treatment.
