The hormone testosterone governs key activities within the male body including sex drive, fertility, muscle growth and energy levels. While no large-scale studies have investigated the effects of herbal supplements on a man's endocrine system, preliminary evidence suggests that botanical medicines can replenish levels of this key hormone in men of all ages. Consult your health care provider before using any hormone-affecting herb, particularly if you have a medical condition or a family history of hormone-sensitive cancers.
Tongkat Ali
This versatile Malaysian herb has been used for centuries as an aphrodisiac throughout its native range. An animal study published in the journal "Phytomedicine" suggested that tongkat ali can improve sexual vitality in middle-aged rats, which tend to have low levels of testosterone and other sex hormones. Malaysian folk medicine supports the use of tongkat ali for improving muscle growth and physical stamina, but no human studies have investigated the herb's effect on testosterone levels.
Safed Musli
In ayurveda, a traditional system of medicine originating in India, the seeds of the safed musli plant are used to improve sexual function, energy levels and fertility in older men. Safed musli seeds contain saponins, which may act as natural precursors to testosterone. Though used primarily as a men's sexual tonic, safed musli also provides health benefits to women--ayurvedic practitioners recommend it to improve breast milk production.
Tribulus
For decades, body builders have turned to tribulus as a safe, legal, natural alternative to anabolic steroids. This potent aphrodisiac is reputed to improve testosterone levels and muscle growth, but studies of its efficacy have been inconclusive. A 2005 report by the "Journal of Ethnopharmacology" found that saponins in tribulus do not influence the production of testosterone in young, healthy men. More studies are needed to determine whether or not tribulus can effectively boost testosterone production in older men and people with endocrine disorders.
Saw Palmetto
Used primarily as a treatment for benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH, or enlarged prostate), saw palmetto may also improve the production of testosterone. The National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine acknowledges saw palmetto's folk use as a treatment for hormone disorders, baldness and sexual dysfunction.
