Keeping up with a fitness routine is hard enough at home. Doing it on the road is a whole different story. Between the long flights, eating meals in restaurants and the break in your routine, staying fit while traveling poses significant challenges. But there are things you can do to keep your routine and make sure you’re getting the food you need to keep your body fit.

Stay Hydrated

Whether it’s in the car or in a plane, water is usually relatively accessible, and keeping hydrated is essential to staying fit. Stock up on bottled water, keep it with you in your travel bag or suitcases and drink up when you’re feeling sluggish or dehydrated. Order water on the plane instead of alcohol, which is loaded with calories and can leave you feeling tired throughout the day, making it less likely that you’ll work out.

Plan Ahead for Your Hotel

When you’re booking your hotel room for a business trip or vacation, call ahead to find out of there is a gym or workout equipment available. Even if it’s only a quick spin on the treadmill, keeping up with your workout routine can help ensure you’re keeping up with your fitness goals. If your hotel doesn’t offer fitness equipment, most still have a pool. Take along your bathing suit and swim laps. Swimming is an excellent cardiovascular workout, not to mention the fact that it is low impact on your joints. You can also pack a pair of old running shoes, shorts and a T-shirt to go for a run at the end of your day.

Plan Meals in Advance

Eating out on the road can lead to temptations that might make you break your diet and leave you feeling sluggish and far from fit. Check out the area of town you’ll be staying in beforehand to find out what restaurants are available. Choose a chain whose menu you’re familiar with, or call ahead to find out if they have healthy menu options. Instead of eating out, you might consider heading to a local grocery store's health food section. Pick out some healthy snacks and stock up on ingredients for easy-to-prepare meals, such as sandwiches.

Eat Breakfast on the Road

You may be in a hurry because of your travels, but skipping breakfast gets your day off to the wrong start. It can make you feel sluggish and tired throughout your day or even cause you to overeat later in the day. Eating breakfast also helps to boost your metabolism for the day, helping your body to burn more calories. If your hotel offers a continental breakfast, stick with fresh fruits and whole grains.
