Making a list of equipment for your camping trip can save you many headaches. With a camping checklist, you won't need to worry about forgetting an important item and having to make an emergency trip to the nearest store. Having a list also reduces the chance that you'll pack too many items and end up crowded, cramped and uncomfortable. Your camping list may differ from another camper's; the important thing is to keep a list of items you feel you must have along.
Shelter
Your most important consideration when it comes to camping equipment is your tent. You'll need a tent that can stand up to wind and rain and roomy enough to comfortably accommodate your family, bedding and other gear you want to keep inside with you. Three-season dome-style tents work well for casual family camping trips. Choose one with plenty of ventilation in case you encounter hot weather. A tent footprint or tarp underneath your tent will protect its bottom from abrasion.
Bedding and Seating
If your back can handle sleeping on the ground, the only bedding you need is a sleeping bag. If you're not quite so keen on roughing it, consider purchasing a foam pad, folding cot or air mattress to provide more comfort. Canvas camp chairs which fold down and include carrying bags provide a convenient and portable place to sit around the campfire.
Food Prep and Storage
A portable camp stove or small grill comes in handy for cooking on your camping trip. Don't forget to bring pots, pans and cooking utensils, as well as plates, cups and cutlery. Include a good-quality cooler, large enough to hold food and beverages for your family. A cooler with a drain spout allows you to drain melted ice out so you can add fresh ice as needed to keep the contents cold.
Emergency Items
A first aid kit should be part of your standard camping list. Stock it well with bandages, ointment to treat minor burns, and topical antibiotic ointment. Take along any prescription medications you or your family members need. A lantern or flashlight and Swiss army knife may also come in handy on your camping trip. If you are camping in a remote area, carry a waterproof container of matches, water purification tablets, and flares or other signaling devices in case of emergency. Bring your cell phone and charger, two-way radios or other communication devices.
Miscellaneous Items
Be sure to bring rain gear and at least one warm outfit per person in case of a cold rainy day. Shower shoes and a bucket to hold shampoo, soap and other toiletries make shower time easier. A deck of cards or other games helps keep you and the kids occupied in case of rain, and insect repellent prevents mosquitoes and other pests from ruining the fun.
