Foam mats are soft, flexible pads that exercisers use to protect themselves from hard floors. Certain types of exercise require foam mats for safety and comfort. Choose a mat that is durable and has high quality. Clean it often to keep it in working condition. If you are unsure what brand or model of foam mat is best, ask the staff at a sporting-goods store or a gym for tips.

Gymnastic Exercises

Tumbling, cartwheels, flips and other gymnastic exercises require mats to cushion accidental falls. Due to the difficult nature of gymnastics, falls are common, especially early in training. To avoid serious injury, trainers often place mats in practice areas and around vaults, parallel bars, trampolines or other gymnastics equipment. While foam mats do not provide complete protection from injury, they do lower the risk for serious injuries.

Pilates and Yoga Exercises

Pilates, yoga and similar forms of exercise emphasize balance and flexibility. Participants often maintain difficult poses for lengthy periods of time. For example, a person doing yoga may stay in a laying-down position for several minutes while stretching. Foam mats cushion the participant during the exercises and prevent uncomfortable contact with hard floors. Also, accidental falls might occur while attempting difficult exercises, so foam mats protect participants from possible injuries like bruises and fractures.

Wrestling Exercises

Wrestlers must practice a great deal to increase their skills. They use exercises, often done in tandem, to practice common fight situations and build flexibility and strength. These exercises often require vigorous movement, such as take-down maneuvers that slam an opponent to the ground. Foam mats lessen the damage from falls and allow the wrestlers the freedom to aggressively attack their opponents without fear of seriously harming them.

Children's Exercises

When children perform exercises or participate in sports training, foam exercise mats provide the safety they need to pursue physical goals without risking injury. Many trainers have children perform exercises over foam mats so that they can encourage the child to attempt new exercises that would be unwise in less safe conditions. Since some risk of injury is present even with foam mats, trainers need to be careful. But overall, foam mats are an excellent safety measure for children's exercises.
