What Are Some Uses for Apple Cider Vinegar?

Apple cider vinegar is used to treat a variety of health issues, both internally and externally. According to the book "Amazing Apple Cider Vinegar," the antibacterial agents in apple cider vinegar can boost your immune system, killing free radicals that make you sick. Apple cider vinegar's acidic nature can also be helpful in treating digestive and skin conditions.

Acid Reflux

Apple cider vinegar is an old-fashioned treatment for acid reflux. "The Most Effective Natural Cures on Earth" states that acid reflux is often caused by low levels of hydrochloric acid, which triggers digestion in your stomach. Apple cider vinegar can add just enough acid to streamline digestion. Take 1 tbsp. of apple cider vinegar, either undiluted or in 8 oz. of cool water, at the first signs of acid reflux to aid digestion. This can be particularly helpful for acid reflux that occurs during pregnancy.

Sunburn

The acid in apple cider vinegar can draw the burning sensation out of sunburned skin, cooling the area and preventing peeling and blistering in some cases. "Amazing Apple Cider Vinegar" recommends applying apple cider vinegar as soon as you come in from the sun. Soak a cotton ball in pure apple cider vinegar and lightly rub it over the sunburned area. Repeat the treatment as often as needed, but at least three times daily.

Acne

Apple cider vinegar's healing powers can also work wonders on mild acne, according to "The Healing Powers of Vinegar." A mixture of the vinegar and water creates a gentle astringent that kills bacteria and heals irritated areas. Combine 2 tsp. of apple cider vinegar with 1 cup of distilled water and gently dab the solution on your blemishes after you wash your face. Store the remaining solution in a jar with an airtight lid.

Dandruff

Apple cider vinegar kills bacteria that can cause dandruff. "The Healing Powers of Vinegar" recommends using the vinegar as a rinse for the quickest results. To apply apple cider vinegar to your scalp, first shampoo and rinse your hair. Then, pour about 1 tbsp. of apple cider vinegar into your palm and massage it into your scalp. Let the vinegar sink in for about a minute, then rinse it away with cool water. Repeat the regimen daily to keep dandruff away for good.
