Nearly 50 million people in America suffer from acne, and about 85 percent of all teenagers have it, according to the American Academy of Dermatology. Gently washing the face twice daily and using oil-free cosmetics can help, but in many cases, those with acne need more. Numerous over-the-counter products, prescription drugs and home remedies are available. One alternative remedy is plain whole yogurt, which contains a type of alpha hydroxy acid known as lactic acid. This acid is similar to glycolic acid, which can benefit those prone to acne, according to the New Zealand Dermatological Society.

Lemon Yogurt Cleanser

In her book "Beauty by Nature," herbalist Brigitte Mars recommends combining lemon juice and yogurt to treat oily and acne-prone skin. Combine 4 tbsps. freshly squeezed lemon juice with 4 tbsps. plain whole yogurt. Apply a thin layer of the cleanser to the affected areas, allow it to remain for about five minutes, and then rinse with tepid water. Lemon juice acts as a mild astringent that helps remove excess oil from the skin, while yogurt's acid prevents breakouts. Store the mixture in a covered jar in the refrigerator when not in use.

Herbal Yogurt Acne Pack

A facial pack made with yogurt, oatmeal and herbs helps fight acne, close pores and tone the skin, Jude C. Todd writes in "Jude's Herbal Home Remedies." Steep 3 tbsps. dried herbs in 1/2 cup boiling water for 10 minutes. For best results, use astringent herbs such as coltsfoot, fennel, yarrow, comfrey or lady's mantle. Strain the mixture and add the liquid to 1/2 cup plain whole yogurt. Add 1/2 cup oatmeal to make a thick paste. Before using, wash your face thoroughly with warm water. Spread the mixture over your face, avoiding the sensitive area around the eyes, and leave on for 10 minutes. Rinse clean with warm water. Repeat the treatment once per week to prevent and treat breakouts.

Eggplant Yogurt Mask

Joan Wilen, author of "More Chicken Soup & Other Folk Remedies," recommends mixing yogurt with mashed eggplant to make a mask for acne-prone skin. Place 1/4 of a small eggplant into a blender with 1 cup plain yogurt. Blend on medium speed until thoroughly combined and creamy. Apply the mask to your face, avoiding the area around the eyes, and allow it to remain for about 20 minutes. Rinse with tepid water and follow with a toner or astringent to close the pores. Wilen suggests making yarrow or chamomile tea and spritzing the liquid onto your face as an herbal astringent, though any astringent or toner will work.
