Car camping is an inexpensive way for families to vacation together, especially when the weather is nice. Everyone can help with campsite chores, participate in family meals and go on planned activities like hiking, swimming or horseback rides. But after nightfall when the campfire dwindles, the tent becomes the most important commodity. It provides a little privacy for changing into bed clothes, a place to set up a cot or sleeping bag and a shelter from storms or nighttime nuisances like crawling or flying insects.

Kirkham Outdoors Springbar Campsite 3 Tent

Wall tents made from canvas are best for car camping because canvas is highly water-repellent and is more breathable than nylon. Kirkham Outdoors Springbar Campsite 3 Tent ($449.95) sleeps three adults comfortably with 72 inches of inside height, 70 square feet of floor space, excellent ventilation from two screened, zippered windows and a zippered detachable front canopy. The tent includes two removable gear storage bags.

Paha Que Wilderness Promontory Tent

Large tents made from polyester or nylon are ideal for car camping because they have more room for the family. The Paha Que Promontory ($449.00) sleeps eight adults. It has 120 total square feet in two rooms with doors on either end and a large side door. The ceiling is 7 feet high and the tent has two large windows. This tent has a "bathtub" floor with sealed seams for water resistance that extends three inches up the sidewall. This keeps water from seeping through the floor when it rains. The tent includes two removable gear hammocks that you connect to the ceiling under each window. This feature is handy for storing clothes or lightweight camping equipment.

Eureka Equinox 6

Umbrella style tents are a classic design for car camping. The Eureka Equinox 6 ($409.90) sleeps six adults. It has six aluminum poles and a sturdy, weatherproof design. The walls are nearly vertical for more space inside the tent. The tent has one door and three windows. The tent area is 87 square feet with a center height of 6 feet, 7 inches. When the weather is bad you can remove the door poles, close the door hood and tie it down with a draw cord. The tent has a heavy-duty nylon bathtub floor to keep out the ground water.
