Doxycycline hyc (hyclate) is a prescription antibiotic that belongs to a class of drugs called the tetracyclines. It treats infections caused by a wide range of susceptible bacteria. Doxycycline acts by binding to the bacteria and preventing the production of proteins within the cells. Because many side effects may occur with the use of doxycycline, a health care provider can help with any questions or concerns.
Diarrhea
Diarrhea is a common side effect that may be present in individuals who are on doxycycline. The patient should drink plenty of fluids and eat small meals throughout the day to help with this side effect. Diarrhea that persists for more than three days or contains blood may indicate a serious medical issue and should receive immediate medical attention. If you develop a fever along with the diarrhea, inform your physician as soon as possible.
Vomiting
Doxycycline has the potential to cause vomiting in patients. According to the Drug Information Handbook, doxycycline may be given with meals to prevent nausea and vomiting. The patient should also be instructed to take the medication with a full glass of water. If the vomiting persists or if the nausea does not resolve, you should seek medical care immediately. Nausea and vomiting that are accompanied by fever requires immediate medical care.
Decreased Appetite
Doxycycline may cause a decrease in appetite, according to the Drug Information Handbook. The patient should eat at regular intervals and obtain an adequate amount of fluids. If this medication causes excessive weight loss, you should inform a health care professional right away to ensure that it does not cause serious medical issues.
Photosensitivity
Photosensitivity, or sensitivity to sunlight, is another side effect that may occur with the use of doxycycline. Photosensitivity is characterized by redness or itchy skin eruptions on the area exposed to the sun. The patient should wear sunblock with a sun protection factor of at least 30 to prevent sunburn. Also, wearing long sleeves and pants or a hat may help when you are trying to avoid the sun's rays. If possible, you should stay out of the sun while on the drug. If you develop signs and symptoms of photosensitivity, inform your health care provider as soon as possible. Your physician may suggest a solution that is best for you. If the redness or itchiness is accompanied by difficulty breathing, this may indicate an allergic reaction, which requires medical help immediately.
