A successful and safe weight loss plan is based on living a healthy lifestyle. When you are planning to lose weight it is important to try to find things to help you lose weight that work for you because a successful weight loss plan must be personalized to your life.

Contract

Make a contract with yourself that clearly states your weight loss goals. You should aim to lose no more than one to two pounds per week, recommends the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. If you are motivated by rewards, make a note in your contract with yourself about what rewards you will get for each goal you hit. You can also write out how you plan to deal with obstacles you may come across. Sign and date your contract and place copies of it in places where you may need motivation or a reminder of you long-term goals.

Journal

A daily eating and activity journal can help you on your weight loss quest because it keeps you accountable for what you eat and what you eat each day. Additionally, the journal can help you to remember what you ate and what exercises you did during the day so you can accurately count the calories you eat and expend during the day.

Water

Water helps you lose weight because it keeps you hydrated and helps you to minimize your risk of overeating. Sometimes when you are thirsty, you may think that you are hungry, according to the U.S. Public Health Service Commissioned Corps. Drinking a glass of water when you think you are hungry but it isn't time to eat can stop you from eating extra calories during the day.

Measuring Tape

Many people gauge weight loss using a scale. This, however, can be misleading sometimes because of natural fluctuations in weight. While it is acceptable to weigh yourself once per week, you should also take your measurements once per month to help you stay motivated. Women should measure their upper arm, bust, waist, hips and thigh. Men should measure the neck, chest and waist. Write the measurements in your journal so you can compare after each measuring session.

Supplements

Weight loss supplements may help you to maximize your weight loss. It is important, however, to ensure the product you take is safe. Many weight loss supplements aren't approved by the Food and Drug Administration and some may be dangerous, according to the Mayo Clinic. As such, choosing what product is right for you may be difficult. Talk to your doctor to find out what product she recommends. In some cases, your doctor may prescribe a prescription weight loss drug to help you lose weight.
