Alternative medicine is a very popular form of treatment for many conditions as well as a preventive measure used to help maintain an overall healthy lifestyle. Two common types of alternative therapies are aromatherapy and reflexology. The main difference between these two forms of holistic medicine is that aromatherapy utilizes natural oils whereas reflexology utilizes no oils or lotions.
Aromatherapy
The National Association for Holistic Aromatherapy (NAHA) defines aromatherapy as "the art and science of utilizing naturally extracted aromatic essences from plants to balance, harmonize and promote the health of the body, mind and spirit." Aromatherapy is a form of holistic medicine that can be used as active treatment during an illness or as a preventive measure.
Application
The most common form of application of essential oils is directly to the skin in a highly diluted concentration. Oils can be applied locally to a specific location on the skin or can be incorporated into a full body massage. Both forms of application will provide both relaxation and psychological benefits associated with essential oils.
Essential Oils
The NAHA lists 10 essential oils that are commonly used in aromatherapy practices. Peppermint oil is used extensively to treat headaches, muscles aches and digestive problems. Eucalyptus is used to ease muscle tension, boost the immune system and help treat common respiratory problems such as asthma and colds. Lavender is used to balance the skin and hormones and has antidepressive properties. The complete list of common essential oils and their many uses can be found on the NAHA website.
Reflexology
The International Institute of Reflexology defines reflexology as the practice of stimulating specific reflex points in the hands and feet that affect internal organs and other parts of the body. Reflexology relieves tension and improves circulation and nerve function. There is no special equipment needed to perform reflexology. The treatment utilizes only natural pressure applied by the hands and does not utilize any oils or lotions.
Benefits
Aromatherapy and reflexology are both forms of holistic medicine that have a variety of benefits. Although the practices differ in their methodology, they are both used to treat acute conditions and as preventive medicine. Both are utilized to restore balance to the body, promote relaxation and tap into the natural healing capabilities of the body.
