Benefits of a Positive Attitude

Having a positive mental attitude is not simply a matter of thinking happy thoughts or doing daily affirmations, hoping that good things will magically happen to you. It takes some work to overcome ingrained patterns of negative thought. According to the Mayo Clinic, having a positive attitude doesn't mean sticking your head in the sand when bad things happen. It means that you approach things from a healthier, positive and more productive view.

Better Coping Skills

Having a positive attitude can provide you with greater resiliency to life's stressful situations. The self-talk that constantly runs through your brain plays a key factor in how you feel both mentally and physically. Do you see the glass as half empty or half full? This can make a big difference in your overall well-being. The Mayo Clinic reports that being optimistic and using positive thinking can promote your ability to cope during times of hardship. When stressful situations occur, people with a negative attitude may feel instantly defeated and may give up, while people who have a more positive outlook may see these times as opportunities for growth and learning.

Greater Success

Henry Ford is often quoted as saying, "Whether you think you can or can't, you're right." If you have a negative attitude, you probably suffer from feelings of low self-esteem and have little self-regard. You may doubt your own abilities. You may automatically set yourself up to fail, if, for example, you walk into a job interview with a predetermined mindset that you won't get the job. People who have a positive attitude usually have higher levels of self-esteem and confidence. If you can counter your negative self-talk with positive yet realistic thoughts, you can improve your chances for success in most areas of life. Dr. Robert Anthony, in his book "Beyond Positive Thinking," counsels that success or failure is linked to the way you think. If you consciously focus on lack and limitation, you are setting yourself up to fail. Instead, focus on what you do want to achieve. Try to consistently catch yourself in negative thought patterns. The Mayo Clinic recommends evaluating the validity of negative thoughts and replacing them with a positive thought focusing on something good about yourself or something good that you would like to happen.

Better Health

Having a positive attitude can result in better psychological and physical well-being. People who have a negative attitude tend to get sick more frequently, have higher levels of depression and even have a higher risk of heart disease, notes the Mayo Clinic. The reasons for this are unclear, but people with a positive attitude may be more able to deal with the harmful effects of stress on the body, or they may follow healthier lifestyles.
