Discipline enables children to learn standards of acceptable behavior and the ramifications for their behavior, notes the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS). While the agency does not support physical discipline, they note that verbal discipline can also be damaging to a child when used irresponsibly. Parents and caregivers may need to consider multiple perspectives to determine constructive and effective discipline strategies.

Discipline Based on Child Age

Set expectations and rules for behavior according to the child's age and developmental level, recommends the Children's, Youth and Women's Health Service (AU). Flexible disciplining enables parents to respond to a child's specific circumstances and needs. For instance, an infant may be unable to understand or follow directions, whereas an older child may need to understand which behavior is appropriate for younger and older children, as well as for themselves.

Discipline Together

Unify expectations of acceptable behavior and behavioral consequences, and serve as consistent sources of exemplary behavior. According to research by Dr. James H. Bray at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, the children of parents with markedly different child-rearing styles are more prone towards behavioral problems than children of families with similar perspectives on child-rearing.

Stay Constructive

Focus on a child's positive behavior and spontaneously reward examples of behavior that reinforces positive values. During times of misbehavior, focus on communicating the behavior you seek, recommends the Department of Health and Human Services. By turning attention from the misbehavior and punishment towards the optimal behavior and reward, adults may find children who not only respect standards of discipline but are willing to dialog about the process.
