Climara Patch .0375 Side Effects

Physicians may prescribe the Climara Patch .0375mg to help patients overcome hormonal deficiencies, to lessen the risk of osteopororis and to treat prostate and breast cancer, the Mayo Clinic reports. The Climara Patch .0375mg, generically named estrogen, provides infusion of the hormone through the skin. This kind of medication remains on the person's skin for a week at a time, replaced by another patch for each week of the duration of the treatment.

Tachycardia

Using the Climara Patch .0375 mg may cause a serious common side effect that affects the person's heart rate. The introduction of extra estrogen into the body may make the heart rate accelerate beyond the top end of the range for adult heartbeats when the person rests. The upper limit of the normal heart rate stands at 100 beats per minute. If the person's heart rate climbs beyond this, the condition tachycardia, an arrhythmia, exists. Tachycardia overworks the heart and can lead to other problems such as heart attacks and strokes. The Mayo Clinic classifies a rapid heart rate as a serious common side effect of the Climara Patch .0375 mg that should be reported to the person's physician as soon as possible.

Breast Problems

Using estrogen transdermally or as an oral medication can produce breast problems in both men and women that classify as serious common side effects. For example, the person may feel pain in his breasts because of the medicine. He also may experience an enlargement of the breasts. The Mayo Clinic calls both of these side effects serious and recommends consulting a physician.

Itching and Irritation

Particularly when using a transdermal version of estrogen such as Climara Patch .0375mg, the person may develop some problems on her skin that classify as serious side effects. She may, for example, develop small, red bumps that itch, a condition called hives, or she may get a rash. Her skin may itch, either because of hives and a rash or without those side effects. Her skin may get red and she may feel irritation, particularly in the area where she has applied the patch. While these side effects may appear insignificant, they, too, classify as serious and should be reported to a doctor as soon as possible.

Swelling and Pain

Side effects of the Climara Patch .0375mg also may manifest as swelling that may occur in the legs and feet, as well as in the hands, lips, face and eyelids, the Mayo Clinic reports. Swelling, along with stiffness and pain may develop in the person's joints with the use of this medication, too. Any pain or swelling associated with this drug should be reported as soon as possible to a physician.

Breathing Problems

Extra estrogen in the body also may cause problems with breathing, including shortness of breath and wheezing. These problems, too, classify as serious.
