Dimetapp, a medication used to treat colds and allergies, comes in several formulations. Cold medications are not recommended for use in children under age 4, pediatrician and columnist William Sears, M.D. reports on AskDr.Sears.com., and Wyeth Pharmaceutical's online information site states Dimetapp Cold and Allergy should not be given to children under age 6. Dimetapp for children up to age 6 contains pseudoephedrine, while medications for use in children over 6 contain phenylephrine and brompheniramine, a decongestant and antihistamine. Some Dimetapp medications also contain cough suppressants such as dextromethorphan. As with all medications, Dimetapp preparations can cause side effects, some severe.

Central Nervous System Effects

Antihistamines and decongestants contained in different Dimetapp preparations can cause central nervous system effects such as restlessness, drowsiness, dizziness, tremor, nervousness, sleep difficulties, blurred vision, trouble concentrating and headache. Insomnia occurs in 30 percent of people taking pseudoephedrine, Drugs.com reports. Antihistamines such as brompheniramine and pseudoephedrine are more likely to cause drowsiness than decongestants such as phenylephrine, which more often cause excitability, Dr. Sears reports.

Gastrointestinal Side Effects

Gastrointestinal tract side effects of Dimetapp preparations include dry mouth, nose or throat, which occurs in up to 15 percent of people taking pseudoephedrine, according to Drugs.com. Stomach irritation and loss of appetite affected around 5 percent. Nausea, vomiting and stomach pain may also occur.

Allergic Side Effects

Allergic reactions can occur with any drug, reports Drugs.com. Signs of allergic reaction include rapid heartbeat, shortness of breath or difficulty breathing, hives, rash, facial swelling, weakness or collapse. Allergic reactions need prompt treatment; mild reactions can be treated with antihistamines, but severe reactions require medical intervention.

Other Side Effects

Any of the medication used in Dimetapp preparations can cause trouble urinating, says Drugs.com. Cold and allergy preparations may also cause tingling of the skin, accompanied by warmth and redness or itching. High blood pressure can occur, along with chest pain, numbness and possible seizure. Symptoms of liver dysfunction, including jaundice, clay colored stools and dark urine may also occur.
