There are many herbs that boost the immune system. They work by increasing immunity and resistance to disease. A strengthened immune system can help fight off colds and viruses. Before starting an herbal remedy, check with health care professionals to make sure it will not harm your health.

Cat's Claw

Cat's claw is a Central and South American herb used for viral infections, arthritis and cancer. The inner bark is the herbal remedy portion of the plant. According to the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine, abbreviated NCCAM, the studies on cat's claw have not shown it effective for anything except providing a small benefit in osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis by stimulating a portion of the immune system. Side effects include vomiting, dizziness and headache.

Astragalus

Astragalus is native to China and used in traditional Chinese medicine for heart, liver and kidney disease. It has also been used to increase the immune system functions. Clinical trials are testing its use for antiviral activity, burns, cancer, coronary artery disease and chemotherapy side effects. Wellness.com states that side effects of astragalus are decreased blood sugar, risk of bleeding and lowered blood pressure.

Echinacea

Echinacea is a traditional herbal remedy for infections. Today it is used for treatment of upper respiratory tract infections and for cold formulas. It is believed to boost the immune system. Clinical trials have researched it for the prevention and treatment of upper respiratory tract infection and it showed some immune system boost with a reduction of the number of colds reported, according to Medline Plus, a service of the National Institutes of Health. Side effects include headache, drowsiness, dizziness, muscle aches, sore throat, nausea, rash or stomach discomfort.

Asian Ginseng

Asian ginseng is used for immune system boosting and for recovering from an illness. It increases well-being and stamina with active compounds called ginsenosides, according to NCCAM. Clinical trials have shown promising results for lowering blood glucose and for immune system boosting. Side effects can be allergies, sleep disturbances, headaches and gastrointestinal troubles.
