Grapefruit oil is extracted from the peel of a ripe grapefruit and has a mildly sweet, citrus scent. Grapefruit oil is believed by some natural health practitioners to have certain medicinal and topical benefits. Grapefruit oil is also commonly used by aromatherapy practitioners. Although grapefruit oil is taken from a fruit, it is important to consult with a physician or health care professional before consuming this or any other essential oil.

Health and Medicinal Benefits

Grapefruit oil is believed to have many health and medicinal benefits. According to "The Aromatherapy Bible," by Gill Farrer-Halls, two to three drops of grapefruit oil, combined with two to three drops of rosemary oil, added to bath water creates an excellent cure for hangover symptoms. Grapefruit oil is also thought to have a soothing effect on an overworked liver or one congested with fatty deposits. Some holistic practitioners believe that grapefruit oil has a positive effect on the lymphatic system and can be used as a massage oil to relieve water retention and reduce the appearance of cellulite. According to "The Illustrated Encyclopedia of Essential Oils," by Julia Lawless, grapefruit oil is also believed to be effective as a diuretic. Grapefruit contains vitamin C, which aids in boosting the immune system to fight off cold and flu symptoms.

Emotional Benefits

Commonly used in aromatherapy, grapefruit oil is thought to have many emotional benefits. According to "The Aromatherapy Bible," grapefruit oil's positive and uplifting aroma aids in uplifting the soul and creating a more positive and optimistic outlook on life. It is also believed to relieve nervousness and depression and boost one's self-esteem. Grapefruit oil is thought to have a rejuvenating and energizing effect, which can help alleviate feelings of lethargy and fatigue. These emotional benefits are believed to be achievable by adding two to three drops of grapefruit oil to a bath, wearing the scent as a perfume, burning the oil in an aromatherapy diffuser or using it in massage oil.

Beauty and Skin Benefits

Grapefruit oil is used in an array of perfumes, cosmetics, detergents and soaps. According to both "The Aromatherapy Bible" and "The Illustrated Encyclopedia of Essential Oils," grapefruit oil is believed to be effective in treating clogged pores, acne and oily skin. When used on the scalp, grapefruit oil is thought to have a stimulating effect on the hair follicles, which promotes hair growth. Grapefruit oil is believed to tone the skin and work as an astringent.
