Yoga is characterized by a series of mind-body poses that focus on toning the muscles and breathing. Yogis benefit from stress reduction, increased fitness and weight loss. Yoga can even help control certain chronic health conditions, according to the Mayo Clinic. There are several types of yoga designed to accommodate people with different health problems and of different fitness levels.

Hatha Yoga

Hatha yoga is one of the most widely practiced types of yoga. It consists of basic poses such as sun salutations that can be performed by just about everyone. Hatha yoga moves at a slower pace than other types of yoga, which makes it a good choice for beginners. Often, general yoga classes offered at gyms or health clubs practice Hatha yoga, but ask the instructor to be sure. Hatha yoga is also available at yoga studios or by purchasing books or DVDs.

Prenatal Yoga

Prenatal yoga is a specific type of yoga offered for women in their second and third trimesters of pregnancy. Because pregnant women are advised not to exercise on their backs or stomachs, prenatal yoga consists solely of poses standing or sitting in upright positions. Classes are typically offered at yoga studios and some maternity hospitals or birthing centers. Prenatal yoga books and DVDs are also available. The American Pregnancy Association recommends yoga as a safe form of exercise during pregnancy, but pregnant women should consult their obstetricians before taking a class.

Bikram Yoga

Bikram yoga, also referred to as hot yoga, is a more advanced type of yoga. It is typically not recommended for beginners. Bikram yoga consists of a 26-pose sequence developed from Hatha yoga by Bikram Choudhury, according to Bikram's Yoga College of India. Not only are the poses more intense, but they're practiced in a room where the temperature is kept at 105 degrees F. The temperature is important because heat makes the body more flexible and causes it to sweat, which releases toxins. Bikram yoga is not recommended for people with certain medical conditions such as asthma or pregnancy. Anyone considering Bikram yoga should consult a health care provider first.

Power Yoga

Power yoga is the general term for yoga classes designed to burn maximum calories and provide a more intense cardiovascular workout than standard yoga classes. The poses are similar to those practiced in a typical Hatha yoga class, but they're done at a much faster pace to keep the heart rate up. Power yoga classes are more mainstream and typically not found at traditional yoga studios.
