Serotonin is a chemical in the brain known as a neurotransmitter. Neurotransmitters like serotonin are responsible for mood. Low levels of serotonin can lead to depression and anxiety. Research from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the University of Maryland Medical Center (UMMC) suggest natural remedies that can help increase serotonin levels.
5-HTP
5-hydroxytrptophan, or 5-HTP, is a chemical produced naturally by the body from the amino acid tryptophan. The UMMC reports that 5-HTP is converted into serotonin in the body. Studies suggest that 5-HTP can be as effective as antidepressant medications used for treating individuals diagnosed with depression. According to the UMMC, 5-HTP effectively increases levels of serotonin similarly to common drugs that increase serotonin such as fluoxetine and sertraline. 5-HTP supplements were shown to have positive effects on sleep, mood and anxiety when improving serotonin levels in individuals. Derived naturally from the seeds of the plant Griffonia simplicifolia, 5-HTP is available in capsule form and not obtained from dietary sources.
St. John's Wort
St. John's wort is the most commonly used natural remedy to increase serotonin and treat depression, according to research from the NIH. This herb has been researched extensively throughout the world including Europe and the United States for its serotonin-increasing properties that are considered comparable to common medications. Numerous research studies have been conducted supporting the claim that St. John's wort is equally effective to prescription drugs known as selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor, or SSRI antidepressants, according to the NIH. Besides increasing serotonin levels similarly to prescription medication, St. John's wort has also reported fewer side effects and safety concerns. The NIH suggests that individuals suffering from depression and low serotonin consult a physician first before taking the herb. St. John's wort is available without prescription and sold as a supplement in capsule form.
SAMe
S-Adenosylmethionine, or SAMe, is not obtained through dietary sources, but it is produced by the body naturally, according to the University of Maryland Medical Center. SAMe aids in the production of serotonin and other beneficial brain chemicals that prevent depression. Similar to St. John's wort and 5-HTP, SAMe is a natural remedy that has been reported just as effective as prescription drugs in treating depression and increasing serotonin levels in the brain, according to the UMMC. Besides increasing serotonin levels, SAMe has fewer side effects commonly associated with antidepressants such as headaches and sleeplessness. SAMe is available in a capsule form. The NIH recommends that you consult with a physician if you are experiencing symptoms of depression.
