Alcoholics Anonymous support programs offer a spiritually-based recovery option. AA support has an effective foundation, and many people benefit from the program. However, not all people absorb the AA tenets and beliefs, which alters the course of successful recovery. Fortunately, alternative support programs exist to provide the group experience without the spiritually-based focus.
SOS Program
Secular Organizations for Sobriety (SOS) offers an alternative recovery method for alcohol and other substance users. SOS separates addiction recovery from religion and spirituality. This program stresses personal responsibility for choices made. It also focuses on abstinence and direct communication.
SOS educates group members about the nature of addiction, the act of denial as a barrier to recovery and how support from shared experiences offers a means for connecting with healthier people. SOS support groups exist in every state as well as online.
Rational Recovery Program
Rational Recovery (RR) is an exclusive program teaching self-recovery tools intended for long-term sobriety. RR utilizes a technique called addictive voice recognition technique (AVRT). AVRT offers a method for learning about the addictive voice that leads to substance use and how to enhance personal commitment for change. Rational Recovery does not recognize addiction as a disease, but rather as a an independent process of choices and change.
RR offers no group counseling or support due to the belief that addiction is a solo problem that requires autonomous healing. The RR program claims that immediate results can occur. It also provides a diversion program to traffic courts for repeat offenders who have failed at the traditional 12-step programs.
SMART Recovery
Self Management and Recovery Training (SMART) offers a scientifically-based addiction recovery option. The program's technique focuses on enhanced motivation for change and learning to cope with urges, problem-solve and gain balance in life. Self-empowerment and mutual support prompt success in this program. Local groups and online support options are available in SMART recovery, but limited locations exist.
